Yep. The Embassy organised it for me a few years ago.

    Turn around time ?

You need completed application form, your passport, printout of flights and printout of hotel reservation if staying in one.

Turnaround is about 4-5 days and embassy is only open from Monday to Thursday 9am to 12pm

When you go in the first time they will confirm the cost (even at the Embassy in Dublin it costs less with a British passport than an Irish passport) and tell you the day on which to return, with a bank draft or postal order.

do you have to have hotel confirm ?
staying with girlfriend but her working visa isnt finalised and is in an apartment so i am very sketchy about putting any spotlight on her

They have no interest in what your gf is doing. Presume you have put the appartment address on the application? If you have nothing on where your staying they wont process

Book a hotel for a few nights on booking.com and cancel when you get the visa.

And visas are issued at the Chinese consulate, not at the embassy.

Do you have to have an "inviter" on the form ?

Not for a simple tourist visa.

    Nope.
I printed out my entire itinerary for my trip but I really don't think they were interested beyond the first stay. The process seems intimidating but they were fairly casual about it. This was all last year so I doubt much has changed.

IMO they honestly probably won't care about anywhere other than your first stay, as they track your movement around the country anyway ie each and every hotel, will notify the police you are staying there, you can't buy a train ticket without your passport being logged etc.

They will know you are moving around the country and will find you pretty quickly...
