Company doesn't want to give me day off for medical proceedure

Hi all, I am quite stressed and would appreciate some advice. Without going into the background, my GP sent me to a consultant for an ongoing issue I am experiencing. Said consultant has recommended I have a colonoscopy.

I decided to inform my company now (proceedure is scheduled a month from now) and essentially they have asked me to change the date as they do not wish to give me the first day of three which the consultant has told me I would need.

I have offered to take the day(s)as unpaid leave but they do not want to let me take it off. Obviously changing the date is not that straightforward and personally I don't want to wait any longer than I have to before having the proceedure. It is not for fun and I am anxious to resolve same.

I suppose my question is, do I have to change the date as my company want or am I entitled, to attend the hospital as scheduled, given this is amedical proceedure to try and addressr an ongoing health issue?

    Anu advice very much appreciated.

Medical needs explains but doesn't excuse absence. Unless their policies say they have to give you the day they don't have to give you the day.

3 days seems excessive. Maybe one day for cleansing treatment and a few hours for the procedure.....max 2 days.

OP I had this done (Along with an endoscopy) and all you need is a day. To be perfectly honest, if it's in the morning and you opt for no sedation, you are ready to go straight after. Operation is a big word for this in my opinion.

Maybe the first day they are regressing to give is due to operational reasons?

OP whatever you do do not opt for no sedation , I have colonoscopys on a regular basis and it is not something to have done without sedation imho ,
the worst part is the prep and the emptying ,
as a previous poster said one day is enough , you start taking the prep about 6 pm and after that stay near a toilet .

No need for 3 days in my case either.

Thanks for all the advice. It's reassuringly to hear from people who have had it done. I should have been clearer in that I had booked two days annual leave advance of this and as it turns out the colonoscopy coincides with the first. I just wanted to take the additional day in advance for the cleansing. I was already scheduled off for both the day of proceedure and day after.
Thanks for all the responses. It looks like I will have to see if the consultant will reschedule....

I wouldn't put it off. You could be left waiting and if there is any chance of an issue arising from the results isn't it better to know asap. If others here have started the cleansing in the evening is this not an option for you too? If you work into the evening would they be willing to let you leave work earlier?

Thanks to all. So I have rearranged to suit company. Managed to get it sooner. I must take it from my annual leave.
