    Hi
Currently looking to start child minding on a part time basis as both my children are now in school and more than likely some weekend babysitting...huge shortage of child minders in my area willing to walk kids to school and I have been offered 4 mornings a week from two different families ...thing is I would like to get Garda Vetted but my understanding is I can’t as an individual...would anyone know how I go about getting it now...I have my first aid done and other child minding courses but I would still like to have the vetting because as a bloke looking to do child minding I am sometimes not even considered and unfortunately have been told out straight they wouldn’t let a bloke mind kids..

Garda vetting can only be applied for by an organisation and even then, it's often a nightmare to try get them to issue you a copy. If you started to volunteer somewhere that required it, it could be applied for on your behalf but you still might not end up with evidence of it.

Seems odd that a person can’t get an individual vetting if need a few adds I have replied to ask if I have Garda clearance....and I have to say no..
I did have it many years ago when I used to volunteer with the special Olympics but that has since expired

I think people ask about it cos they know they should be they really have no knowledge of how it works! I have to get Garda Clearance for every job, course and voluntary position I have. Including renewals, I have probably had it 15 times over the past 11 years, but only once got a copy of it. It was a pain to get but I was starting a training course and needed it so I could start my voluntary position. I actually don't think it can be used by an organisation that hasn't applied for it. For example, I work in a family centre and as part of my role I do a bit of work in a school. The school want their own clearance. I have recently finished a training course that will have me work with children in another role, for this I had to get more garda clearance. So in the space of 6 months I have had to go through the process 3 times, all for the same job.

So it not actually linked to the individual ..,that’s crazy you need to get clearance every time you need to change roles or job .
Surely a data base which employee and an employer/organisation can access to Check who is cleared would be a better system.

There is (or was the last time I used it!) a facility for self employed persons to access vetting (piano teachers and the like). It was via an Authorised Signatory in Limerick who was set up to only do those kinds of applications. I don't have his details to hand but if you give the National Vetting Bureau a shout they should be able to supply them. Last time I checked he was known at the United Vetting Alliance. Good luck.

Edited to add: You have to be vetted for each individual role because the information that is released can be different depending on what you're actually going to be doing. Also the recent legislative changes now mean that a copy of your vetting outcome has to be made available to you if you ask for it.
