Wondering anybody can point me in the right direction - i discovered the attached 1902 fishing trawler crew list with my great grandfather and grandfather listed. My great grandfather is listed as master with a cert number 0728. Is there anywhere you can look up this number and see a registration form or any more information about him.

findmypast.ie has 65 similar crewlists for him. Get a trial membership and download away.
I think he would come under Britain, but the Irish Mariners would probably point you in the right direction regarding being a Master etc..

'Masters' were certified by the Board of Trade, whose archives are at the National Archives in Kew. I'm not sure if this applied to the Master of a trawler, but it would be worth checking.
Looking at the Ancestry list there is no Christopher Mullen among the many listed.

A lot of marine records listed in the Kew catalogue are actually in the Caird library (National Maritime Museum) at Greenwich.

Looking at the above register, it is tough to see Patrick Mullen born 1831 still on the register in 1902, perhaps he was semi-retired.

He might have been master of the vessel, not necessarily a certified master. The cert number is one digit short when compared with those on the Ancestry list.

I thought the number seemed a bit short compared to the ones i found also in the uk NA but it's the same number on a lot of the crews he is listed as master (on fimdmypast) and even one later on when he is listed as a 2nd hand (master had own number). i checked other crews around the same time and owned by the same yard and the masters had different numbers. so if he wasn't a certified master any idea what the number signifys?

just found out that Patrick was Christopher's father so maybe giving him a dig out.

Thanks for this. I've just found my Great-uncle on the Irish Mariners site. I didn't even know he was a sailor! I was actually looking for his Father who I knew was a sailor.
