    How is this monitored?
Has anyone any experience of being in PAYE employment while on a career break from the civil service.
    TIA

A couple of TD's, ministers and Taoisigh had no issues doing it.

    It's not prohibited?

The people I know on career break are all in employment elsewhere.

    Certain types of employment are.
    Self employment isn't.
I'm just wondering what sort of checks, if any, are carried out.

You are allowed work for any private company.

Public sector is a different story.

What kind of company you getting work in?

The terms of career breaks were altered in 2013, the relevant circular is http://circulars.gov.ie/pdf/circular/per/2013/04.pdf

It is now permissible to be employed while on career break
    6. A career break shall consist of special leave without pay for a period of:

    (a) not less than six months and not more than five years for the following reasons:
     Family reasons
     Other domestic reasons
     Travel
 Educational purposes (educational purposes may include training courses
with a practical training element for which there is a nominal
    payment/grant made to the student)

    (b) not less than six months and not more than three years for the purpose of taking
up employment in the private sector or becoming self-employed.

Do you have to state the reason for the break when applying? If your reason was family/education/travel, there might be an issue if you are then out working as a PAYE employee. If you return to work in the same tax year, would your Department be aware that you've been earning?

I've been asked to work for a private company.

    Thanks for the replies.

What reason did you give when the career break was approved?

I never said I was approved, or even that I applied.
I'm just wondering if a responder has experience of working while on career break.

They'd be aware of your tax credits/rate band, not of any external earnings.
