how to double-check the LDS birth records?

I'm using Ancestry and found a 1878 birth record they say is from a volunteer index named "Ireland Births and Baptisms, 1620–1911", Salt Lake City. I think this is the LDS archive.
The birth record names the daughter and mother with the same first and surnames. There is no named father. The particular first name runs in the family for generations so that doesn't surprise me.
My question is - can I assume that this is an unknown father situation, or is it possible that it is a transcription error that mistakenly duplicated the child/mother names and omitted the father?
There is no image available to see the original document. A reference is given that seems to be a microfiche (FHL Film Number). I believe that in the U.S. that these images can be seen at LDS headquarters, but I can't fly to Utah! Is there a way in Ireland to see a copy of the original image?
In general, do people find transcriptions in this collection accurate?

That record set is a hodgepodge of anything and everything. Something from 1878 is probably from the civil records so you cross-check there. Anything that late *should* be registered.

The microfilm system is being retired so everything will be available to view online; or if not online on computers in the FHC in Dublin. This is happening at the moment. However, that record set is an extract so there is no single set of films for it.

Many thanks for the info. I googled "FHC in Dublin" and I'm still unsure as to what it is?

It's the Family History Centre in Glasnevin belonging to the LDS. It's in the same building as their temple opposite the cemetery.

But you should be able to get an 1878 birth on www.irishgenealogy.ie

You can use the Catalogue to check the source for the data - see : FamilySearch Catalogue.

Are there any other references ?
Many of the records in this collection are partial extracts of civil birth records and include part of the numbers used for indexing - e.g. volume and/or page, which can help locate a match of the birth records using FamilySearch index and IrishGenealogy.

(many of these extracted birth inaccurately include a reference to christening date & place, a detail not included on civil birth records).

If it's a 1878 birth, the birth record can be accessed on https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/civil-search.jsp - the image of the register should be viewable. If you can't find the birth in 1878 check other years and variant spellings of the firstname and surname - the LDS transcription may have errors.
