The first artificial satellite even launched today the 4th of October, 1957.
It is the beginning of the space race between the USA and the Soviet Union.
It launched at 19.28.34 pm from Baikonur Cosmodrome.

When you launch an ICBM can you track it by radar on the way up and gravity does the rest since there's no air resistance to change it's path until it's almost at the target.

For a satellite you need a second course correction, further away to get into orbit. Way more difficult and Sputnik caused a scare.
