2015 Hyundai i40 saloon

I'm in the market for buying a new car. I've my eyes on a 2015 i40 saloon. I've been given one to drive for a couple of days and so far I really like it.

I've heard horror stories about clutches in them and the gearbox. However I'm in car rental and I've driven loads of them and never seen one actually fail and yeah the gear changes can be a bit stiff but nothing too bad. The face lift looks extremely nice

What's the general consensus? From what I've heard in the business they are 50/50. Some love them some hate them. There's a lot of taxi drivers with the estate version. The clutch on the brand new ones is smoother .

It's either that or a Mondeo but the Mondeo seems a bit boring.

TLDR : can get a i40 saloon for a good price. Decent mileage. Small chip on roof is after rising it's about the size of a pea if not smaller. Opinions on them are split.

Has anyone owned one from 2015 -2017

The clutches are definitely a huge problem in them, but a 2015 has a good bit of warranty remaining and the clutches are a known issue and covered by warranty.

Gearbox are a little prone to random failures too which is never nice. They are also fond of front tyres. Otherwise they are a pretty ok car. I'd probably have one over a Mondeo of the same year. The Mondeo probably has marginally more badge credibility but they aren't that nice a car.

I know opinions are subjective but I cannot for the life of me think how a Mondeo can be dismissed for being boring over an i40.

For me the i40 is past it's sell by date, they came out at the end of 2011 and haven't aged well, the facelift resuscitated a bit of life in them but really they should have been replaced by something more modern and competitive well before now. They seem to be a car or segment that Hyundai have forgotten about since they just want to sell them to the Gardai and Tucsons to everyone else but I suppose it really depends on where your priorities lie and what you want from a car.

Probably not what you wanted to hear but it's my 2 cent worth anyway.

I'm not saying the i40 is anything to write home about, merely personal preference but I'd have one over the Mondeo, as you suggest, that shape Mondeo is out since 07 with a few minor rehashes and it really shows.

If it’s the current model Mondeo then I’d have one over the i40, but if it’s the 07-15 Mondeo then I’d have the i40

I've got a 141 estate (Executive model, don't know what that involves that the standard doesn't), and love it. All of my other cars have been older so I don't have much to compare it to, but it does everything we need it to and I personally like the look of it.

Only issue in just over a year has been the reversing camera not working. They ordered the part a week ago, and will be fitting it on Monday so all good on that front.

Actually, Yeah, reverse cameras are a popular fail too but with a warranty that big, who cares :pac:

The mondeo is boring at least I feel. I've driven nearly every " new " car out there in my job so I find them bland, also they feel very heavy for the 1.6 engine in the same way the Superb does at least for me.

The i40 is nice, it has the 5 year warranty, I'm getting it for a great price so why not, thanks for the answer

What makes the front tyres wear?

I'm happy enough that I can get cheap tyres but I'd still love too know!

This is an executive as well, car steers very well and it's very comfortable to just cruise around in

Looked at the i40 recently and found it all a bit average, the deal breaker was the amount of road noise, really poor. Ended up getting a 2016 Superb which is better in every respect, comfort, refinement, etc.

How much is the i40 coming in at?

It's a ex rental 70k on it I think around 16k. Gonna get my mechanic to look at it. Still has the 5 year warranty too.

That isn't a great price, I was looking at a 152 estate from Northern Ireland with 35k miles and would have it for just under €14k. In that price range there was a choice of 4 estates in Northern Ireland. There is a more saloons available.

This has 49k miles and also factor in VRT

Yea so lower mileage and €2k cheaper including vrt. I phoned about 3 of them priced between £10250 and £10500, the 3 dealers reduced to £10k with no negotiation.
