Do people still do this, I thought insurance on 10+ yr old cars stopped people buying them, still though an "individual" from Mayo turned up and bought my old banger this evening to do just that, more luck to him.

As the saying goes "One man's junk is another man's treasure." Plenty of people out there still experiencing hardship so buying a fairly new car is not an option for them. I'd say insurance really doesn't become a problem until your looking at 15 year old + cars. Others see the opportunity to fix them up cheaply in the hope of making a few bob in the process.
