Had same predicament myself.asked same question on another forum.the advice i was given was get a pup and train it yourself.
Suppose it depends on the time you have to train and experience.i hadnt much of either so ended up sending pup away to be trained.shes working away ok now.still young tho.

Thanks for that. Time and experience would be flat on the ground with me! Where did you send her or how did you go about that?

Training 2 dogs here myself. It's slow going and you need plenty of patience

About 20 minutes each. Keep them on a long lead. Teach them the basics first e.g sit, come here, bring them to you, hunt on and left and right. It takes work, and it won't happen over night.

What does "hunt on" mean? Is it the same as look back?

As David says, put them on a long rope so that when you call her back and ifshe doesn't come, stand on the rope, she won't be long learning same with sending her out to the right or 'away' as we're supposed to use, pull her back until she gets to know what you mean....letting her do the wrong thing will only destroy her
'Away' for right and 'come bye' for left is what we're suppose to use but it doesn't matter what words as long as you use the same command every time.
The long rope is twenty foot long and drags the ground, if they're over enthusiastic it slows them down, and it's often easier to reach the rope than the dog if you lose control..
I find when the dog gets tired from pulling the rope and you take it off, that's when you get the best training in

I got a DVD . Mine is only a May pup so bare 6 months .

She is doing well. Away, come by , stand , drive on and sit .. Her favourite is "that'll do!" When she gets praised !!

Just fire on the DVD and let her watch it , bit of revision and a practical exam at the end!

It's called "first steps in border collie sheepdog training " Andy Nickless - uk guy, I found it good anyway and what he saying makes sense .

He gives you every scenario with different dogs that are too aggressive /gripping sheep to ones with little interest , the commands and loads of tips .

Ie that'll do - so she switches off and realises she is done .

How the tone of your voice is encouraging/ discouraging to her and also Even if it's a ****e session with her .. Finish on a positive as she will want to do better next time.
