there is a local amateur photographer who is well into his 60's now, but he has taken community and local photos for well on the last 50 years or so on a variety of formats.

I don't know how well he has archived and managed his collection, but if he hasn't done it already, I thought that it would be a great project to catalog, archive and digitize his collection - I haven't spoken to him about it yet, but I'd be fairly confident he would agree to do it.

This collection would then be publicly accessible (with his permission naturally, he'd have control over what pics would or wouldn't be available)

So - if anyone any comments, advice or suggestions in terms of the work involved, the best methodology, the best tools, etc, etc, I'd really appreciate your input.

    thanks in advance

there is a Facebook page-The 50 Francis Street Photographer-where a woman is essentially doing the same thing with her grandfathers old photos. might be worth contacting her.

Flickr used to be the go-to location for things like this - but I would say its future is uncertain.

So - I would say consider Google Photos. Mainly because the search options are unrivalled. Storage is unlimited if you choose the "high quality" option. You can also curate themed albums, as well as having amazing search facilities.

However, while viewers can add comments - I think they need to log in to do so.

I use it as an online resource for all my personal photos and have 50K++ images stored that way.

Another option is a Facebook Group. I'm a member of a few groups whose main purpose is the sharing of photos of particular locations. This can work well - but not everyone is willing to use FB.

I wonder if the National library archive might be interested?

    Distribution isnt the problem.

Presumably all/nearly all of the collection is prints/negs. The scanning process for them is quite laborious. The first thing you need to do is get a rough count of how many shots you'll have to process so as to estimate the time commitment.
