CNN reception

I live in Mayo and whenever the weather is bad, rain or strong wind, and yes we do get sunshine from time to time, the CNN signal breaks up. This happens on both my non-subscribed Sky box and a Tevion receiver.
I'm just wondering if this is a common problem and/or if it can be overcome.

As far as I understand things the CNN broadcast that we receive here comes via the U.K. CNN studios, and yet I have no problem with other U.K. signals, BBC etc.

    Many thanks.

There are about 800 stations, so there could be others that you don't know about which are also weak signals. They are not all the same strength.

BBC 1 NI is 20 dB on my big dish, CNN is 12.7. You probably need to get someone to check how well aligned your dish is.

i had the same problem OP

you need to twist your LNB about 20 degrees clockwise and it should do the trick

There's no way you can be so sure incorrect LNB skew is the OP's problem.

    Thanks for these replies folks.

As it's only CNN that doesn't like our weather here I'm adverse to paying someone to come out and check the dish alignment. If, as you say, there are other stations with weak signals they're obviously ones that I don't watch.

With regard to moving the LNB, the problem there, as I see it, is wouldn't that affect other stations that are not giving problems? not important enough to take the risk of screwing things up.

I think my easiest option appears to be just hope for better weather. In the wild and wooly west :D.

What's good for one should be good for all now. I think one of the older satellites had slightly different polarisation to the others, but it's gone now.

If you enter your address here, & choose the relevant satellite position (28.2 E Astra 2E etc.), under 'Dish Setup Data', you will see a figure for LNB skew, & an explanation of how to set it. If it's a Sky type dish you have, it will probably have a limited range of numbered settings, with no. 2 being correct for the west of Ireland.

well not for me, all the channels had a stronger signal as a result

Had the exact same problem, adjusted the skew of the LNB and bingo CNN in addition to all channels had a strong signal strength and quality. Other channels possibly impacted could be CNBC & Bloomberg both of which are on weaker transponders. Of course the dish could be slightly miss aligned also but I'd chance a minor adjustment of the LNB skew first (as philstar suggested) to see if it improved things assuming the dish is easily accessible.
