    Hi.

Are implants and braces best done by an orthodontist or can a regular dentist do this work? Need both done.

Also would be great to receive recommendations by PM for Dublin up to and including Northern Ireland (I travel up regularly).

    Many thanks.

An orthodontist will have done a **full-time 3 year** postgraduate course specialising solely in braces. They provide all types braces (ceramic, conventional, Incognito, ect) & straighten teeth 8 hours a day, 5 days a week.
A general dentist providing braces will- at most- have done a few weekend/months' courses in braces. They will fit it in around other types of routine dentistry such as fillings, dentures, extractions. So it might compromise perhaps 50% of their working week. Most commonly, Invisalign is the only brace option offered.

Implants- talk with the orthodontist for recommendations.

Thanks Dianthus. This is very helpful. Would the same apply for implants or would the orthodontist be better to go to than the general dentist?

Dental implants should be placed by a qualified oral surgeon, periodontist, implantologist or suitably qualified dentist...

The crowning or restoration of the implant should be done by a prosthodontist, restorative dentist or suitably qualified dentist....

An orthodontist usually doesn't have a direct role in this treatment other than making the space available and advising on the sequencing of the treatment....

Thanks for the advice. Wonder who I should go to first, the orthodontist or the implant specialist?

    A prosthodontist...

Let them plan the case, present the options and include the other clinicians where needed.....

    Hi.

    Am OP of this.

Eventually got the implant work done. It was my own dentist in North Dublin who had specialised training in implants. Orthodontist told me at the time that this was the right way to go. All consistent with the good advice here. Overall it was a great success. Feels and looks like a normal tooth now; took 6 months for the void to be forgotten about given it was there for decades. Can’t understand why I waited so long!

    William
