Satellite Broadband...should I downgrade

    Hi,

I'm in a remote area and am currently on a Wicklow Broadband 7MB business plus package.

    With this I get:
    7m download, 7m upload, Contention ratio 10:1.
    I'm paying €86 a month for this.

If I switch to a domestic package, for half the price I get:
    7m download
    1m upload
    Contention of 20:1

Both packages have unlimited download allowance.

Was originally on a buisness package as I was working from home and was doing a lot of remote logging in.

Now I do work from home but minimal use of teamviewer, a good bit of netflix use and that would be about it. Would I be as well make the switch?

What is the type of domestic connection is available, wireless or adsl phone line? Contention is a big issue as you probably won't get 7mb download during the peak evening hours. If it is adsl you're probably a long way from your local telephone exchange. You probably get 1-2mb down at best and 0.5 upload. My advice is to retain the satellite.

    Sorry, a bit of confusion.

Sattelite is the only option but I'm wondering for the same price I'm paying now I can double my download for half my upload (give or take) with the same company, would this be a wise choice?

Wicklow Broadband use fixed wireless, not satellite broadband.

The big difference between the business package and the domestic package is the contention ratio as you know.

If you live in the east of the county you will probably be ok with 20:1

Over here in the west I used to struggle to get more than 1 meg in the evenings and Netflix would not work, because of contention.

If it was me I would stay on the 10:1 package.
