Hi, so my tax is due and I'm at the point where I have to put in my insurance details, I have a Chill policy underwritten by a company called Ivernia. Yet on this new version of the website, neither chill (who I wouldn't expect as they are the broker I believe) or Ivernia or an "other - Irish" option appear on the insurance drop down list.

    What do I do now?

    This too shall pass.

Ivernia looks to be underwritten by LA Parisienne Assurances, are they listed?

I also pick a random company and make up a policy number. Anyone know why they ask for this info?

When you did the tax renewal over the counter (e.g. in the tax office in Nutgrove SC), you had to produce a current insurance cert., the clerk simply looked at it and handed it back. Today they'd like you think that the requirement to have a current policy still exists even though the online renewal facility has no way of telling if you're typing in garbage.

You are supposed to insured before you can tax a vehicle so that is why they ask. They were supposed to use the information in an ANPR system for tax and insurance but apparently Ireland can't do a database.

That's correct and it's open to corruption. You can put any renewal date and any policy number in and it isn't checked. They assume people will enter the correct date but they have no way if checking. If your insurance was expiring the next day there is nothing to stop you entering a date 11 months into the future and therefore your car will not flag on the ANPR system/cameras if you don't renew your insurance the following day.

The problem was trying to use the motor tax website for insurance enforcement. There is nothing stopping you insuring a car with a policy which expires the next day, they never took the details down in the tax office. The way to track insurance is with a live database from the insurance companies, like the UK, and not a voluntary system that they tried to shoe horn into the task.
