What type of dog? You really need to figure out a way to keep your cat safe. This is very likely going to escalate and end fatally for the cat. How do you mean you could not stop it?

Hi I was calling the dog off but she wouldn't listen. I didnt know what to do it all happened so fast. Was talking to my husband and we are going to build an enclosure for the cat so the dog cant get near her.

    Seriously? Where you there?

Calling a dog in mid attack on another animal will not work. Shouting in fact might escalate the situation. Not easy with kids in the middle of it all but in situations where a dog has a cat, you would have to physically separate them. Of course the is always the risk of someone getting bitten or scratched.

    probably yes.
the op was comfortable having the 2 together presumably.
generally dogs don't attack cats for no reason
sometimes a dog wont like cats but the owner usually knows this and keeps them separate.
unless this is the first showing of that behaviour

so I would guess that it probably is something the cat did to the dog that made the dog react

were you there. it sounds like you only saw half of it.
I agree about separating them. that is a tricky thing to do with out hurting yourself. a bucket of water or hose often seperates them

Unfortunately sometimes dogs will attack cats they have lived with and there might be no reason. They don't have the same body language either so you always have to be very careful. I know of a situation where a dog running by a perimeter fence caused the resident dog to grab and kill the family cat it had lived with for years.

No I was not there hence I was not blaming either party involved.

Usually the dog stays well away from the cat but she went right up to the cat and the cat scratched her. So the dog was provoked but the cat was trying to get the dog out of her space. I think I will have to keep them seperate at all times now. For everyones sake. I know I handled it badly I just panicked. kicking myself now.

We got a puppy recently too so I think the dynamics have changed.

Relax OP you can sort all that stuff out later.
For now don't stress too much about the cat, key word in your post is "ran". If he ran away probably not too badly injured. When he turns up give him a good once over and a trip to vet if you think necessary.

I think the OP should try to arrange to get the kids minded so she can look for the cat. My poor cat ran away too but he was fatally injured.

Have to agree. It's been a long time already OP. If you have anyone that could mind the kids I'd go looking for the cat. He could be badly hurt and reluctant to come home after what happened.

The Dog seems like an aggressive maniac - should probably be put down!! Imagine if he attacks the children!!!!

Mod note... Ardinn, as one can only conclude that you're looking to provoke a reaction, please don't post in this thread again.

The OP is probably stressed enough for now. Best to let things settle down and keep kids and dog calm.

Seriously just because the dog does not like cats, does not mean he will ever attack the kids. My own terriers will kill any small furry or feathered creature they can catch. Does that make them maniacs? No. They absolutely love the kids.

What type of dog have you got OP?

Try not to worry too much OP, cats often run off for hours on end.

In the future a bucket of water should do the trick.

she is a cross between a lab and a springer spaniel. Loves the kids she just doesn't like the cat! They always kept their distance up til now. She kind of sat on the cat and was mouthing at her and growling kinda like she does when playing with the puppy (puppy totally fine) its just the cat is much smaller.

yeah going to have a scout around now and see if i can find her.

My cat killed a bird a while ago - maybe the cat should be put down incase he suddenly changes and attacks humans.

Yep - that's how ridiculous your post is.

For op - I wouldn't be too worried. Cats have a tendency to sulk off and come back when they are hungry.

Our two dogs and one remaining cat all know each other well, since kitten/puppyhood. They get along really well, you can even witness tender greetings, smooching sessions, etc.

But that's all inside the house.

Out back, in the fenced-in dog enclosure, the cat is fair game. Once it shows its face it will be eyed suspiciously and as soon as it starts running it will be chased and cornered if possible. So far the dogs have never come close enough...but I have no doubt that things could go terribly wrong ... potentially.

Thankfully the cat is clever enough to mostly stay out front (where the dogs can't get to) and only ever look into the back from a safe distance or from a height.

Not everybody has a bucket of water at the ready...let alone a bucket, but I've found that a coat, particularly something like a raincoat or anorak thrown over the dog(s) will disorientate them long enough to get them apart.

If it's a heavy coat, it will also provide good protection against being bitten...
