Selling old car for max money, min hassle?

I want to sell my old 2005 barely NCTd car. Obviously I want to get maximum price for it (I appreciate this is likely to be 500 to 700 max) but don't want the hassle of a private sale. I literally want to walk into a garage and get rid if it, so while I understand that I'll lose money vs a private sale, i don't want to sell to "carz 4 ca$h" and only get 100 notes or whatever.
Any recommendations or ideas on where to approach? What genre of place if specific places can't be named, or am i wasting my time...should i just sell it for scrap?

It doesn't work like that. You either make the effort and get its value, or sell it cheap to someone who will.

I appreciate that. What I mean is, I'm prepared to take a certain hit but want a recommendation of the types of garage, for example.
Will a "local lad" garage be interested, in general, or a slightly larger garage, maybe. Or main dealer as a trade in?

    Make?
    Model?
    Mileage?

I'm guessing it's an undesirable make?

Yes, it is. Renault Modus. 2005. 150k. Will need brakes and timing belt probably. Unattractive banger!

    Unfortunately not a great prospect.
It needs too much investment for someone to pay 500 and make a profit.
The cash for cars guys will break your heart.
If you don't want to sell for scrap you could just put up an advert.
Maybe some friend or relation with time on their hands would do the sale for you.

So realistically, I need to donedeal it or else use it as a trade in? *wails*
If the latter, will I actually be losing money, as in the garage will push up the price of what I'm buying artificially high to make it look like I'm getting more for the modus when in fact its like, 50 quid or something, and i may as well sell for scrap?

Thanks a million for all the advice so far btw

With little to no NCT you'd do well to get someone to take that for free, never mind give you cash for it.

You are right not to trade in, much better to buy for cash even if you have to give the Modus away.

Ha ha. No it does have an nct, it's just not an attractive buy privately being honest.

    How long is NCT?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,843 ✭✭✭tea and coffee

One year. I just got it

My comment about "little nct" was more that while it does in fact have a cert, we all know that it only tests certain things ....

    Well that makes a difference.
I misread your op reference to"barely nctd" to mean it was about to run out.
With a years test someone in need of a temporary replacement might take a chance on the t belt.

If you just want rid, and garages wont take it sell it at your local auction. No hassle, but you will get next to nothing cash wise.

How much will a scrap yard pay if you drive car into their yard for a car like this?

With a valet inside and out with a years NCT one could ask 600 . As long as body is clean and not dented and scratched and it runs perfectly.

Probably worth more if you use as a part exchange under one of the car manufacturer's scrappage scheme against a brand new car. Some will offer up to 3k or 4k depending on what you are buying. Of course this means you might have to spend more to get into a brand new car.

Don't even bother trading it against a second hand car as it's worthless to a dealer.

I'm not in the market budget wise for a new car. But I'm interested in what you say regarding the trade in for 2nd hand. Thanks

Donate it to your local fire station. They will be glad of it. They can practice putting out fires with it.

You could contact a couple of traders on DoneDeal who are advertising Modus cars at the moment, describe the car and see what they'd give you. I'd not expect much. I'd an old car lately. It was a Saab, and I was looking at another Saab from a guy who specializes in those. I thought he might have some interest in the old car if only to move it on for parts, but even without looking/asking details he said no, offered 200 off the price of the used car I was looking at, and said I could keep my own machine.

Rather than dealer route, if you want to get some money: clean it up as best you can, put it on DoneDeal at a price comparable to similar ones, and see what happens. Drop the price if you're not getting action or interest.

You might manage a few hundred if well presented, especially with nice long NCT, but it will be a bit of hassle and in my experience at that end of the market you need to be ready to show the car at short notice since those buying are often folk who've had a car calve on them and need something in a hurry to tide them over. They're working down through the cheap cars in DoneDeal and if you don't pick up the phone they'll be onto the next seller.

How do you know? Advertise it and see what happens.

Exactly. Stick it on DD and see what you can get.
