Smart control upgrade for manual timer

    Hi all,

    Looking for some guidance please.

I have oil fired central heating with rads in most rooms.

This is controlled by an old school APT manual clock timer, like this one:

    fIML6Ue.jpg

There are 2 IMIT manual thermostats (one upstairs and one downstairs).

    VUMWYkf.jpg

Water is heated either when the heating is on, or, by manually flicking a switch by the immersion tank.

I'd like a smart home system which I can control via a phone app, and if possible using Google Home.

I've been looking at Nest and presume the heat link would replace the APT timer with the Nest thermostat going wherever I choose. But what would be the impact on the 2 manual thermostats? Can I just set those to max and they then become redundant?

Any other suggestions on something that would meet my requirements?

You can get a smart timer & turn on the heating via your phone app but if you don't already have separate zones you won't be able to do much more with the app.

if you want to control water separately or upstairs /downstairs you'll need to get some motorised valves installed and some pipework altered

    Thanks for the response.

I'm not interested in anything more than being able to turn on/off the heating and setting a timer via a phone app.

Is Nest overkill for such a requirement?

I don't know that much about them. I have a climote installed that would meet your requirements. The downside is that they charge I think 18 euro per month year. The nest has no annual charge. Also with the nest I think you are future proof. Nest can turn on & off lights and much more if you want that in a the future

Yeah, Climote seemed to fit the bill until I saw the ongoing monthly charge.

The charge for climote is €40 a year
But contact them to confirm cost
If you sign up or renew your contract with airtricity or electric Ireland they offer a free climote

Climote have brought the renewal price down to 18 or 20 so long as they pay directly to them or so through the provider

Check out eph ember controls or salus RT310i, cheaper than nest no other fees outside of the purchase cost and will do what you need.

I'd second that. An Irish company too and always easy to deal with
