Hello,

I want to cancel my BOI credit card as I have moved it to another bank and the balance transfer has gone through.

Cant make it to a branch during working hours and just spent 15+ minutes trying to reach someone on 0818251251 with no answer.

Can you advise on another way to proceed with closing the credit card account?

Thanks,

David

Hi david87,

Thanks for getting in contact with us here.

You can also post a written letter of request to close your credit card account. We would ask that you include your credit card information a contact phone number and a signature for yourself in the letter.
Before requesting this closure we'd ask you to:

Ensure your credit card balance is cleared in full,
Cancel any third party direct debits or subscriptions directly with the retailer,
And Government Stamp Duty maybe charged upon closure. (Government stamp duty is a Government tax. We collect this tax on behalf of the revenue each year on April 1st for the previous year or upon account closure. Further details on Government Stamp Duty can be found on www.revenue.ie.).

You can send this letter of request to your account holding branch or the following address.

Bank of Ireland,
Account Closures Team,
3rd Floor Operations centre,
Cabinteely,
Dublin 18.

Thanks again for getting in touch with us here.
Darren.

Hi,

Im not writing a letter in thanks. I need the account closed in a shorter timeframe than that would require.

Can someone from the cancellations department call me?

Just spent another 10+ minutes on 0818251251 with no answer. I have spent 20e on calls into you today with no response.

Exactly the type of terrible service thats made me leave BOI in the first place.

Thanks,

David

I'm in the exact same boat as david here. It's 2018! Have there been any improvements and can we close credit card accounts electronically like the rest of the civilized world or is BOI still processing these things as if it's 1970ties? I tried reaching out via Online Banking but the messaging system seems to be broken for a month now. Very disappointed

Hi martinsvi,

Thanks for your post here on boards.

In relation to the messaging system you have raised this in other thread and we are looking to investigate it for you as there is no overall issue with the service desk system.

To close a credit card account you can either call our credit card team or complete a written instruction to close the CC and an advisor will be happy to arrange this for you.

Thanks,

Kareana

how do I write a written instruction? I would be happy to email them or use the 365 banking to do so. I am not in Ireland and will not be there in foreseeable future - like david here, I have already wasted a lot of money listening to the waiting music on your phone lines, I simply don't see fit spending any more money on snail mail

Regards,
Martin

Hi martinsvi,

Thanks for your reply.

As mentioned above if you wish to close the credit card account you would need to complete a written instruction or contact our credit card team as it wouldn't be possible to close a CC through emails or through the online service desk.

Within a written instruction you would outline that you wish to close the credit card account, include your name, contact number and the credit card number please.

Please be assured I will pass your feedback onto our team.

Thanks,

Kareana

how is it possible that I can apply for a credit card online by couple of clicks and receive it without leaving a house, yet to cancel it I have to compose a letter, somehow guess the correct address (you don't even seem to be willing to share it here or anywhere on you web site) for the correct department, pay the postage and then hope that it all goes through? I honestly feel that you are making things difficult for people willing to leave your bank.

I will seek advice from the regulators about this, I'm trying to end things in a civilized matter, if you don't want to accept it, by all means I will leave those accounts hanging there, you can charge your fees as much as you like, good luck ever recovering them, you will literally get nothing from me.. ever..

Try and sort it out. You will have government stamp duty piling up, and you will get a bad rating with the credit bureau for future loans

No postal service in the country you live in? Wow .

I had to send a letter to china a couple of weeks ago,  it was sent 4pm Monday,  it was in its destination 8am Friday .

When you signed up to your card, you got terms and conditions. In these it explains in extremely plain English how you cancel your card. You accepted these terms and conditions

Seems you didn't read them.

And you want to blame someone else for your own lack of very basic due diligence.

before you tap away on your keyboard so desperately trying to appear smarter than you are, why don't you have a look at BOIs credit card Ts&Cs yourself? They are publicly available! It says right there that to terminate the contract, I need to submit a written request. It doesn't specify how or where. If they have a system in place where I can securely log on and write messages to the bank, how is it not enough when it comes to terminating the contract?

I could not care less about your letters to China, it's all about transparency and accountability. I've dealt with this bank long enough to know that written correspondence goes missing and fees add up. If you've nothing constructive to add, mind your own business kiddo

So you have finally read what you agreed to and still have an issue ?

Hurts when you finally realise that its in the terms and conditions you accepted that you read and understood.

Address is in a post at top of the thread.

It's also in the terms and conditions .

And its also printed on all your statements.

And if a letter can get from here to china in 3 days,  it will take similar to get from wherever you are to Dublin .   Very easy , very basic.

you're missing my point completely.. This topic is not about getting the right postal address, it is about the ease of subscribing and cancelling services.. As I said, I would appreciate if you could just troll someone else this evening, your ignorance and idiocy does not impress me

I'm not trolling .

When you signed up you accepted terms and conditions .

If you didn't like them you should not have agreed to them.

No use whining years later.

Rule #1 - always always always read the cancellation conditions of each and every contract you agree to . It will save you getting angry with yourself as above.

are you lonely by any chance? I see you have a lot of opinion but could you please leave my conversation with the bank to me? Thanks. I'm sure there are other topics in these forums that are crying for your wisdom, why don't you go where you're needed

Not at all. But thanks for the concern.

But as I said, by reading the terms and conditions of legal contracts you agree to can save you a lot of egg on face moments.

Very very simple.

I don't agree with sky tv cancellation policy - hence I don't have a sky subscription.

I love the netflix cancellation policy - hence I have a netflix account.

Always read your terms and conditions and you won't get angry with yourself.
