What sort of person will be out at midnight buying FIFA18

Heard the adverts today for toy stores being open tonight at midnight just to sell a new computer game.

I got to wondering why people would feel the need?

After all, it's not like they are limited like concert tickets. Thry will be there on Friday or Saturday morning as well.

And if you do go out at midnight, I assume you'd be an adult. Are you really going to head home, and maybe start playing a computer game at 1230 or 1am? No work to get up for?

Fifa is the same **** every year. Get outside and play a real game of football.

Also - why is it called Fifa18 when it's 2017?

Me. Got a problem with it?

Heading home from a night out, pop in and buy it. Why ever not? People like to get playing it as soon as it's out to move up the rankings quicker. I'm a FIFA widow, I know too much about it.

Why trek to a shop when it can be downloaded from the comfort of the sofa? And besides, FIFA is ****e.

I have no interest in computer games, but it's a hobby for many people. What harm if they want to get a game as soon as they can. I don't understand why someone would need to be judgmental about that.

People tend to be sniffy towards gamers for some reason.

    Spending hours getting tanked? Yay!
Spending hours playing computer games? Boo!

That's not it at all. The people most judgemental about this are computer game players. FIFA games are the exact same every year, it's a ridiculous exercise to wait up for them.

My husband had a whole list of differences between the newest version and the last one. Don't ask me to repeat them because I didn't retain the information but there was four or five differences at least.

The usual assertion that people that play it don't play sports is fairly defunct in my experience. I know quite a few people - from my kids and their peers up to adults - that love it and play real football, some at a very decent level even up to semi-pro/pro.

Playing FIFA is not my thing but wouldn't judge those that do.

Yeah I don't know anyone who plays it who wouldn't also play a bit outside too

Actually alot of soccer skills kids learn come from what they see on fifa or pro evo. I enjoy fifa but wouldn't be that mad into it.

    * and no, I don't go to them myself and am happy to buy the item weeks/months later

I suppose people that download it don't care about selling it on. €60 is feck all if you get a lot if use out of it and anyone I know who plays it does get the use. And if not selling it on, what's the big deal about owning a physical copy? It's just clutter.

I remember when the GTA 5 came out years ago and how people waited for that until midnight too. I decided to go see if I could buy it the next day but it was already sold out. I went to a bunch of different game shops to get it, even took a bus to the Square from Dame Street just to see if it was in. I had to wait a week before I got it. I know it doesn't seem that bad, but when you're really into something you just want to get the damn thing as soon as it is out.

You can trade your old console for a new one with fifa 18 for the price of the game in GameStop. That's one reason. The difference between the new and old console is similar to the difference between fifa 17 and 18. SFA.

Well, my hubs listed differences and they are worth the price of a new game to him. He plays it a lot, as in gets very high up in the rankings, so he has no problem handing over money for something that he has such an interest in and that works out as very good value for him. He knows all about the different trade ins you can do and isn't bothered. He likes the convenience of downloading it there and then and that is worth it to him.

People who enjoy games I'm guessing. Whether they have to do anything in the morning or not is irrelevant.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,030 ✭✭✭Minderbinder

I suppose for something like FIFA it's more likely to draw a crowd at midnight. If they were to start selling it at 9am people would come in in dribs and drabs. It's probably just a marketing thing, trying to get more attention.

Fifa also has a big online gaming community. There are early advantages to being the first ones to have access to it.

I used to be in the same boat but in or around June next year the game will be free on ea for the Xbox so I wait until then. I don't play online much as I suck at it so the differences mean nothing to me.

I always go to midnight launches of games because gaming is what I'm into. It's not like I've a social life anyway

Still have FIFA 17 in the plastic wrapper... I should probably stop buying computer games! Don't have the time any more :-)

Gamers will probably get a bad rap for a while yet which is unfortunate.

What people don't understand is that there are many levels to the hobby. I could say I am an avid reader and some would be automatically impressed. A reader of what though? OK Magazine or the complete works of Shakespeare?

Likewise there are switch-off-the-brain games like Fifa or even Candy Crush and then there are grand strategy and role playing games which require a lot of brain work and even physical note taking at times as you go along.

It's a fantastic medium of you find a genre that clicks with you.

Went to the midnight launch on Monday night to trade in my Xbox before stock ran out. The trade in offer was too good to miss out on

I didn't compare their style of game. I said they are both switch off the brain type games, i.e. casual.

You're an idiot if you go for a midnight launch for a video game.

I say that as someone who has done it myself. Last and final time was for Gta5. I spent 100 minutes queuing up for it. To be charged an extra 5 euro by gamestop at the till. Only for everywhere to have the game.

Consoles can sell out. Never games. So it's stupid to go for a midnight launch.

€60 for a download! They can go and jump... for €60 id expect a physical copy that I actually own and trade in/sell on if I dont like it/complete it. Its still fairly unclear what will happen in the future to digital games once Sony/Microsoft discontinue the services to older consoles.

FIFA depreciates a lot quicker than most games though. My kids have a few older versions here in great nick but gathering dust. It's hardly worth your while even trading them against a new one.

I needed some spare cases a while back. Went in to a secondhand shop and bought about 5 copies of Fifa 11 like a psycho for 50c each. They have their uses.
