Buying Fertiliser

Just looking to see how and when do people buy fertiliser? I've extra land next year and will be spreading more so my usual trips to the co op might not be feasible anymore. I'm thinking of trying to buy direct and get it delivered by artic to the yard at home

Do many people do this? Is there a minimum tonnage amount? When is the cheapest time to order?

The best time to buy is probably now as Yara have announced a price rise coming in the near future but you may not have access to finance for that.

Generally most farmers around here would order Urea/Can in December for delivery in early January and again in late March for silage and the midseason grazing season.

There are two suppliers here abouts, local co-op that delivers what you need when you need it and would be passing 3 or more times a week with feed/fert on pallets and a smaller local man delivering imported fert in 600kg bags which would need to be stored on pallets or a shed unless they were being used quickly.

If you tell lads whereabouts you are, they might be able to point you in the direction of your local suppliers?

Thanks for that info. I'm in Kilkenny so grasslands would probably be the obvious one for me

Thanks for reply, have never forward bought Fertilizer but it could be a year to do it.Can you forward buy it and ask local Agri Store to keep it in their yard until it’s needed in April?......am on good terms with the store.

Would be buying around 6 tonne 18:6:12 in half tonne bags and another 2 tonne of the same in small bags.

Have people heard Fertilizer is meant to go up in price again in the New Year? I see the OP person thinks it is set to.

Thanks for any replies and Happy and safe Christmas to all.

Fertiliser price usually takes the same route each year..cheapest time to buy
    1. End August/Start Sept

    2. Often withdraw from quoting until start of December for before Christmas payment..+€30

    3.. January very Early Feb delivery/ credit price/summer payment...+€70

    4. Order Feb/Mar for immediate delivery...credit...summer payment +€90

5...Collect at Coop as you use +€100

Cost of carrying 1 tonne of CAN (€200) from August at AIB Credit line interest rate is less that €1 per month..

There probaly isn't any other input that we use that we can calculate our requirementbwith such predictability...

Saw official report someplace , Fert to increase 16 % in 2019 .
This is most likely correct as 2019 fert will have been purchased via Option from the Fert Companies abroad . Indeed this fert is already landed in the yard, or on the high seas on its way .
