Boring fuel efficiency question

I drive a newish VW TDI Polo every day on my commute from Ennis to Castletroy in Limerick. As I start work before eight, I usually drive through the city in the mornings and take the tunnel in the evenings.
I often wonder due to the start/stop nature of city driving even when traffic is light - would it actually be almost as economical to take the tunnel and pay the toll.
    Any opinions? :-)

I don't think you'd burn additional 1.5 litre of diesel just by going through the city.

All depends how much your time is worth to you

Fair point on 1.5 litres of diesel. Five minutes in the morning possibly not worth €1.90!

If you factor in wear and tear on brakes, clutch and tyres plus the increased chances of getting caught for speeding and / or having an accident going through town I think it's a no brainer to take the tunnel. Far more relaxing also and another few minutes in bed.
