Have vrt appointment next week. I guess theres no way of short cutting the setting up of an nct appointment i.e. until I have an irish reg presumably I cant book an nct test?

Do I have to take my place at the back of the queue or if undergoing vrt process will they slot you in earlier for nct?

I VRT'd two cars this year and on both occasions I was able to book an NCT slot within 2-3 days of getting the irish reg number.

You must have an Irish reg to book an NCT.

To speed up the process, send a scan of the VRT receipt to bookings@ncts.ie to request it to be set up and in fairness to NCT it will be on their system within hours, then book away. (I know this is true as I did it last week)

I can confirm that in my experience you can book NCT couple a days after obtaining Irish reg.
Currently it's not really a bother as NCT can mostly be booked at very short notice, with them having appointments sometimes even for same day/next day.

But I remember in old days, when NCT waiting times were couple months, it was big issue IMO that you couldn't legally drive your newly imported and registered car, as you had to wait couple months for NCT appointment.

To make the system perfect, they should proceed NCT test at the time of VRT inspection.
I can't understand why they can't do it, as it would make things much simpler and better.
