#LetsDriveBetter: Joining lanes

In a situation when one lane of two lane road closes (exp. because of road-works), why don't people act rational (and to their best interest at the same time) and don't keep driving the lane to the end?

Trying to change early only increases congestion...

And why, when I do the rational thing, I get road-raged?

Zip merging is unknown in Ireland.

To be honest there's good few more important rules of traffic which are also unknown in Ireland, but would probably be good to be introduced first.
Zip merging imo is long down on the list.

If you get to the end then more often than not nobody will let you merge (it's MY road! attitude), so it's better to get across as soon as you can to give you plenty of chances at it.
True. People seem to think you're trying to skip the queue.

I never said I was, but what does it have to do with Zip merging?

And effectively I am. What's more, I want others to join me!

Why did you feel the need to make yet another anti Irish statement where you said irish drivers (that means all) can’t engage in a basic act of courteousness on the road. I see zip merging all the time in cork on my commute to work where lanes end whether it’s due to roadworks or lanes / slip roads simply ending. Just because some people don’t do it doesn’t mean that Irish people are somehow inferior drivers as you seem to yet again insinuate with your sweeping statements which always seem to single out Irish people. Seeing as you think your nations driver are such a fantastic breed that we need to learn from please share the death rates in Ireland versus your country.

My point is glasshouses stones and all that... you have shared dash cam videos of you engaging in dangerous / aggressive driving, advocated drink driving and driving without insurance so I don’t think you are qualified to judge anyone’s driving!

I have yet to drive in a country where it works.

It's because people are idiots. If you drive all the way up to the point where the lanes merge, you incite road rage, because (in the eyes of many) you're selfishly overtaking the other drivers.

Half the people don't understand that merging works fairest and quickest if done at 1 spot, and that this spot should be where the lanes actually merge.

I'm in Cork too and I see it all the time. I thought it was the standard way of driving in Ireland and one of the things we actually generally do right

    Haven't seen it yet done.
    • westbound on Lower Glanmire Road, just before R635
    • westbound on Bishopstown Rd by Aldi
    • or very recently in Dyke Parade, where everyone gets into the bus lane even before the traffic lights with Mardyke St.

If you drive all the way to where the lane ends, you'll be left waiting trying to merge. Sad but true.

Admittedly I don't drive on any of those roads regularly. I'm living in Bandon and working near Mahon Point so I'm generally driving back and forth between them

If traffic is heavy you'd be lucky to be let in even if you want to change in good time. Simply because a lot motorists are inconsiderate *****.

Only place where I've seen zip merging works in most cases is Germany.
I even heard it's part of their road traffic rules (not sure if it's true) - maybe that's the reason it works there.
I know in Poland it's heavily advertised, but still in most cases it doesn't work.
People either don't understand what it's about or don't want to understand.

Why did you feel the need to make yet another anti Irish statement where you said irish drivers (that means all) can’t engage in a basic act of courteousness on the road.
You are purely making things up.
I didn't say anything about Irish drivers (you write it with capital letter f.y.i).
And I didn't say anything about acts of courteousness on the road either.
Your reply makes no sense at all.
I said that Zip merging is unknown in Ireland - which IMO is true.
If you did survey among random people, I can be sure over 95% would have no clue what it is and what's it about.
It has never been advertised or promoted by RSA.
It's not written into any traffic laws nor the RotR.

And yes - I consider there's more basic things like proper use of road markings, usage of vehicle lights, indicators, right of way, etc, which plenty of drivers in Ireland are struggling.
I purposely never used a term Irish drivers, as there's plenty of foreign drivers in Ireland either immigrants or tourists. You can't distinguish them on the road from those having 100% Irish blood for last 10 generations...

Why is that - I don't know - I can only think that possibly complete lack enforcement of most traffic rules especially in rural regions, and lack of adequate driver training for many many years greatly contributed to lack of those skills among drivers in Ireland.

I see zip merging all the time in cork on my commute to work where lanes end whether it’s due to roadworks or lanes / slip roads simply ending.
    Fair play to them.
I've never been to Cork, so never seen it though. Can't comment.
Just because some people don’t do it doesn’t mean that Irish people are somehow inferior drivers as you seem to yet again insinuate with your sweeping statements which always seem to single out Irish people.
    See my explanation above.
Seeing as you think your nations driver are such a fantastic breed that we need to learn from please share the death rates in Ireland versus your country.
How do you know what is my nation?
    Maybe I'm Irish.

Anyway - if you refer to Poland which I'm pretty sure you are, be advised that Zip merging also doesn't work there.
Correct usage of road markings work slightly better than here.
Correct use of vehicle lights or indicators, works hugely better than here.
Death rate on the road are much higher.
My point is glasshouses stones and all that... you have shared dash cam videos of you engaging in dangerous / aggressive driving, advocated drink driving and driving without insurance so I don’t think you are qualified to judge anyone’s driving!

I have never shared any dash cam video of my engaging in dangerous or aggressive driving.
    I never advocated drink driving.
Insurance business - it's more of a political subject than driving subject, but no - I definitely don't advocate driving uninsured.
