Undertaking?

    Scenerio today.
3 lane road. Left lane is a merge and exit lane for two close junction. So right lane and middle are for general traffic.

Heavy commuter traffic and the road has a 100km/h limit. I overtake a car in the far right lane and move back into the middle which will shortly become the left lane.

I have my cruise set to 100km/h which according to my phone gps app is 95km/h. Suddenly I find myself undertaking a long row of cars on the right. A car has moved into the right lane and is pottering at 80km/h. Within a few seconds I've passed this row of 4 or so cars

Have I broken the law technically? Passing on the left is illegal except if traffic on the right is slow moving like during heavy traffic but does that exemption end at a certain speed? Can one 45-50mph car really dictate the max speed of cars in all lanes unless a Gard pulls them over for misusing the overtaking lane.

Undertaking should be reserved for the funeral home.

The only question you need to answer is if the traffic in the right lane was moving slowly. If no, you did brake the law, if yes, you didn't...

I personally find this to be a bit silly because everyone on the M50 goes straight into the middle and right lane and at times end up doing 80kph while the left lane will have no traffic whatsoever. This is especially obvious southbound just after the Blanch exit.

You wouldn't be 'undertaking' anyone if they weren't driving in the passing lanes to begin with.

When I drive on the N4 technically I undertake people all the time because they're in the passing lane and fail to maintain speed at the hill past the Chapelizod exit. Or Westbound where the M50 merges, am I supposed to slow down to 50kph just before the hill at Liffey Valley while people coming off the merge get up to speed? No thanks.

You would be very unlucky if done for this, though. Widely ignored, especially on the M50 or other 3 lane roads.

That statement could be easily applied to 95% of all traffic laws in Ireland.
