    Hi,

my mother in law has a form of motor neuron disease and we are looking at the best options for a car for my father in law to have to get modified for ease of access to the passenger seat. Have tried the official channels and websites but can't really get a definitive steer (pardon the pun) so looking for practical experiences please.

Currently they have a 2015 corolla fyi.

    Thanks in Advance.

There's 2 basic types, one where they use the original car seat, and one where they use an aftermarket less bulky seat.
3 door models are usually better for access than 4 door saloons. Your father in law may be able to claim VRT/VAT back on a new car.

    Hi Colm

Any thoughts on car models that are most suitable for people in this situation?

A friend of mine has an aftermarket swivel seat in their 3dr Auris. They choose the Auris as it was the best car for the passenger to get in and out of (and they looked at a lot of cars at the time!).

I can ask them where they bought the seat if you want? The seat may even be for sale as they no longer need it. AFAIK the seat was very expensive when they bought it. Could've been around €1k.

We got the passenger seat in the RAV4 made into a swivel seat, there's a few garages in Kilkenny and it cost €1,200. You can claim tax back on it and it's a few hundred euro you get back.

If the passenger has a primary medical cert you could be able to claim the residual vrt and vat back even on a used car you already own.

I know you can't claim this on lease cars but can you claim it if the car was bought on pcp?
