Hi all, as per the title, my 06 petrol avensis won't start. Turn the key and feck all happens, no clicking, nothing. I know nothing about cars so just looking for an idea what might be wrong before I bring it somewhere tomorrow.

I've checked fuses, voltage on the battery is 12.31 volts, battery has an indicator which says battery is fine and I've also turned on the lights while trying to start it and they didn't dim or anything like they would if the battery was dead. Everything electrical still works.

Any idea most likely cause and what its going to cost me?

Could be a loose earth cable or starter motor/brushes at their end of life... if you can locate starter motor hit it a few belts it might jolt the brushes to make enough contact to get you started. Else look at earth cables to starter motor etc.

Wife said it was doing it on friday during the day but worked fine from friday evening up until today so thats a bit strange.

I'l see if I can give the starter a belt and have a look at the earths If I can see them.

12.3 resting voltage is low for a battery, it should be closer to 12.9
Try another good battery first before you change anything else.

Mine is an 07 avensis and we had that same fault. It is likely the starter motor. Seems it is a common issue. You can get it reconditioned with a warranty (place in Naas just off ball in Naas offered this) or buy new. Mechanic living next door to us got it going with a whack of his walking stick (I kid you not) and he advised we go to Toyota for a new one as he couldn't get a new one easily with any warranty whereas Toyota gave us warranty with ours.

I don't have another battery to try it with. I'll try jump it tomorrow before I bring it anywhere.

Toyota garage near me in Liffey valley, I'm already resigned to having to bring it there in the morning! Will give an indy guy I know a shout first.

I would push start it . If it starts give it a good run and when you get home and cut the engine, try and start it again straight away.

If it starts, then more than likely it's a starter motor issue.

I'd prefer new but that choice comes down to the price and my wallets ability to pay it.
