Question about the red box!

I'm talking about the red/pink box at traffic lights in relation to where you should stop?

I always thought the box should be kept clear for cyclists/motorcyclists, however I was recently told that the red/pink rectangle is actually there for drivers to stop on top of [.....] as a waiting bay until the lights turn green!

I always stop behind the box, but maybe I've been wrong for all these years?

    Who's right?

You are correct; cars should stop at the first stop line at the junction, as the space beyond it is reserved for cyclists per section 7.2.10 of the Traffic Signs Manual 2010.

That'll also be relevant in the absence of a shaded area. There's a junction by Ikea that has a stop line about 1.5 meters before another line. I often see people go up to the second one there.
