HELP? Unexpected "Pay and File Payment Reminder" letter

Hi all, I've been sent a Pay and File Payment Reminder letter for the first time and I have no idea why. Can anyone throw some light on it?

My background: worked as a contractor via an umbrella company from 2014 to mid-2016, and I'm a permanent employee since then in a different company. There was a gap of 3 weeks without any duties between those two periods.

    Any guidance is highly appreciated!

If you were self-employed in 2016 you should have filed your return a few weeks ago. Umbrella company have probably not bothered to do it - could cause you to be fined or audited.

He has until 31 October 2017 (or 14 November 2017 if he uses ROS) to file a self assessment return for 2016. He's not late yet!

My umbrella did their job and got my tax return submitted to Revenue, even got some money returned from paying too much tax.

Does this sound like common procedure?

It depends, were you self-employed or not? You can't just trust these umbrella companies to do everything properly, they might even disclaim any liability.

Your return for what? There are lots of returns to do. There will be another one due in oct 2018.

You may had had pre lim to due in 2016 for 2016
And the final return this year for 2016
You are due to file by 31st October or 14th November online as mentioned but if you have no other income in 2016 the pre lim prob want due because the accountants would have filled a p30 each month to the revenue showing your deductions of income tax USC but as a self employed for 2016 (for any period of time) a tax return is due this year

I have no idea about any that, I paid the umbrella to take care of my 2016 income tax return. I've contacted them already, if that doesn't help I'll have to get an accountant I guess. Literally no clue about any of that.

    Thanks for your help guys

Didn't even to bombard you sorry , but in simple terms you are due to file a tax return (also known as a form 11) for the full year 2016 by either 31/10/2017 or 14/11/2017 (if online) is my understanding

More the likely your were a contractor operating in a limited company as a director (also known as an umbrella company).

In these cases you are classed as self employed and due to file a tax return each year you have income as self employed

As you had income as self employed (contractor / director in an umbrella company) in 2016 your due a tax return in 2017

Let's see what your accountants says tho obviously but the above is my understanding

Either way it's isn't too late and is just a reminder the form wouldn't take you too long
