Exhaust camshaft adjuster exploded. Engine running rough on idle but when reved its ok. I have now gone through 4 genuine Mercedes-Benz exhaust camshaft adjusters and they are not cheap.

Has anyone any idea its m271 1.8 engine. Why does it keep happening???

Maybe the cam shaft has been damaged slightly and is putting strain on the adjusters? Also if the chain was stretched could impact but guess you have replaced.

Good Morning, The first time it happened I put a new chain kit in with the new adjuster and they all genuine Mercedes-Benz parts. It doesnt make sence how its just the exhaust one that does it. Somebody suggested putting a new oil pump in it. When the new adjuster is fitted it runs fine. The odd time P0020 fault code comes into it causing the eml light to come on. You can clear the fault or if you leave it the fault will clear itself in a few days.

4 is a lot, how many miles has it got? They usually last somewhere 75000 - 100,000 miles. Are you changing both cam adjusters or just the exhaust? You should really change both sprockets with a new chain and tensioner as a set, otherwise the older sprocket will lead to rapid wear on the new chain.
There's a crowd in the UK selling the parts for a fraction of the cost of genuine MB . The sprockets are CNC machined and they are lifetime guaranteed . ( m271parts.com)
There's a breather hose under the airbox which fails and some say the vacuum leak causes the chain to stretch although I don't see how.

Are there any breaks/cracks on the pipework going from the airbox into the engine?

    Including the supercharger pipework?

    Surely that's a warranty issue.

They dont think so and i fitted a new engine oil pump and cleaned out the strainer while the sump was off.

Something doesn't make sense about that. How could the circlip come undone unless it was poorly fitted or badly made.
Which begs the question, where are the circlip, plunger and spring now?

Well thats the thing I will have to take the sump off again. Pain in the back side.
