Right people sitting down and watchin The Rock ,wit Nicolas cage and Sean connery, great film, cheezy but entertaining but somethin you'd watch over and over again. But yet it's the type of film that didn't win best picture as in an Oscar, OK granted braveheart won it that year.
But my point is this there's films out there that are cheesy but entertaining that never came close to winning best picture, but there is films out there that get oscars but we don't watch as often and yet win here's my example, die hard 1998 but best picture that year was 'The Last Emperor '. Now not saying it's not a good film but let's be honest I'm switching over to die hard every time.

Is it just me or do I have a point?

I thought Kick-Ass deserved an academy nomination for best picture. But because it was a Comic book movie it didn't get a look in,

Die Hard and Kick Ass for best picture. I've heard it all now.

Predator. Came out in 1987, (I'm guessing you made a typo with 1998 btw)

Never get tired of watching Predator, almost every line is a classic. If I meet someone who hasn't ever watched it, I think there's something wrong with them

    Here's a TL;DW of the movie:

You do have a point ......... but one that will be lost on the "regulars" of this Forum I'm afraid ........ regardless, your point is valid in my opinion.

A couple of now obscure titles.

Deadly Pursuit (1988) - Sidney Poitier and Tom Berenger flick about chasing the bad guy through a forest.Didn't win any awards, but was notable for being Poitier's first starring role in years.

Runaway Train (1985) - Excellent Jon Voight movie, probably his last great film role before he churned out all those forgettable supporting roles/cameos.

I completely agree with you. I can of course appreciate a real, genuine, classic movie but at the same time, I can appreciate a quality popcorn movie.

As an example, I watched Moonlight last year and I know I'll never watch it again whereas I have watched Con Air and The Matrix at least 100 times each.

Isn't the MTV Movie Awards the 'awards' ceremony that was created particularly for the likes of The Rock and Face Off to get recognition?
Most of the major blockbusters are rewarded by the Oscars. Though they tend to be the technical categories.

T2 won 4, the Matrix won 4, Mad Max won 6!

I suppose for a film to win best picture, then all the categories are considered by the voters i.e. the performances, direction, writing, effects etc.
That's where the likes of Predator et al will come a cropper.

I guess the greatest accolade any film can receive, that the best recognition it can get is that we re-watch them and still get enjoyment from them. You certainly don't need any Oscars for that.

If every single best picture winner ever was on at the same time as Big trouble in little china, I know what I'll be watching :)

Terminator 2 is my favourite but i like some of the older ones for dialogue, story and continuous takes/shots. Too many films change the view or angle every few seconds and it is annoying imo ('tis bad for the brain too)

    Honourable mentions:
Gone with the wind (haven't this on dvd)
    A bridge too far.

Oscars have almost become a sign for me to avoid a film. I've watched so many purely because of an award and then been bored senseless. Little Miss Sunshine is the standard bearer for this phenomenon.

Starship Troopers is genuinely one of the most under-rated Sci-Fi's there is.

It's a bloody fantastic movie, and for the time, the special effects were top notch too.

Commando: it's stupidity is so pure that it becomes transcendent.

Well the special effects haven't aged well but 'The Thing' was great fun and a little scary at the time. Claustrophobic horror overlaying a whodunnit vibe.
Good acting. Great score. Funny dialogue. Including the memorable......

    John Carpenter is terribly underrated.
