A question re irish passports for child under 10. Father is Irish born now in the Philippines. He has full guardianship and custody issued by courts in Philippines. Mother deserted the child. They were not married. He wants to obtain Irish passport for the child but told that Irish courts do not recognise documents issued in Philippines because they didnt sign up to the Hague Convention. altho it appears they may have done so recently.

    Any advice?

There are legal firms out there that specialise in immigration and passports and so on. Best dig out one of them.

First step might be to get the child on the Foreign Birth Register.

Not sure if the Hague Convention would be fully relevant to this, if the child has an Irish Citizen Parent, the child is entitled to Irish Citizenship whom ever has custody.

It could take a year to obtain an Irish passport, and (last time i spoke with the Irish consulate in Manila) they would not issue a child passport outside Ireland.

If the father wants to take the child to Ireland, the child could travel to Ireland on a Filipino passport, with a suitable visa.
