Wouldn't it be great if there was something like the Fleet app where you could rent a specific vehicle for a day or two, from main dealer demo or pre reg stock?

Some hire companies do prestige vehicles, Hertz do Range Rovers, A8, Mercedes etc

Since when is a Volvo, Mercedes or a Land Rover a prestige vehicle?
    Common as muck.

Had never heard of it before, cheers.
I'd been wondering about the feasibility of setting up something like this a while back, but assumed insurance implications would be mental. Looks like these guys managed to figure it out, which is cool.

All of this information can be found here.

You could say that for just about every post here. What car do I buy, where's a good mechanic for X problem, but this is a motoring forum and people are here to ask questions and discuss things.

I personally wouldn't know what to look for on this topic and a thread like this allows people to offer suggestions so someone can look in the right direction. Maybe someone here has a suggestion or somewhere to avoid. Somethings aren't easy to find on Google.

I doubt owners of high end Mercs etc are going to be signing up to the Fleet app

The problem in Ireland is that 518/520d is considered high end these days..:D

Don't be taking it so personally Bazz. It was a general statement which realistically given they're so common these days are not a high end car - unless you think a 520d is high end?

Maybe to impress the neighbours but most folk will see past that.

The amount of smart ass comments here.
Op, I think sixt do them but for sure hertz do but I'd suggest to simply call the renters and see what they have on offer.

Lol, not taking anything personal especially from a random internet poster I don't even know. Just gets tiresome nearly every second thread here with the same old cliches posted. Nobody here including myself, ever said a 520d was high end or was it impressing the neighbours, that all seems to be in your head.

    Time to move on.

A mate of mine living in London was signed up with a classic car club that has a fleet of various classic and performance cars for rental, if there was any sot of occasion he would reliably turn up with something old or exotic.

Not a day goes by where you won't seen one of these brands on Irish roads.

Maybe 30 years ago they would have been prestigious, not anymore. The average Irish person can own one of these. Plenty of dumb f~ckers will spend their year's wages on them and live on tinned beans in a shed. In Ireland, these cars are typically base models with puny engines though.

A prestige brand today would be one that is completely unobtainable to the vast majority, ala Bentley, Rolls Royce, Lamborghini etc....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,575 ✭✭✭166man

It's not even a years wages as it's all about that PCP and new number plate. Get Finance with whatever company will provide it. I used to see this first hand on "premium" cars.

  • Site Banned Posts: 1,765 ✭✭✭Pugzilla

Worst thing about motoring in this country are the ****ty diesels everywhere. Big petrol engines aren't even an option on many models here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,700 ✭✭✭goochy

Get into the real world . The average person can't afford a new jaguar or a volvo xc90. No more **** talk please

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,694 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

If I was thinking of renting a high end car for a day, I'd be hoping to get the likes of a Porsche, Ferrari etc, not a Volvo.

What has your opinion on car brands got to do with the OP? The OP is not in the category of dumb ******* who wants to but one, he just wants to rent on, why do you have a problem with the OP car choice?

I swear people on here just want to pick an argument over the stupidest things, does it make you feel validated or important?

Thanks just wanted peoples experiences but it seems everyone drives jags land rovers or volvo 4x4s these days so why would you hire one ? Lol Not even that interested in supercars just driving a boring company car and wanted to try something a bit more interesting

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,473 ✭✭✭✭Blazer

    ignore the idiots op..
Jags and Mercs are prestige cars still. Just because they have affordable entry options doesn't make the high end models less prestige.
Would you class a BMW I8/M5 as a non-prestige model because BMW offer a 1 series?
I wouldn't class Volvo as a prestige model but their XC90 gets excellent reviews and at 60K starting its a lot of cash plus their other cars get excellent reviews.
Another model to consider is Audi Q7..I test drove a model a few weeks back which was 100K and I'd definitely class that as a prestige car regardless of how many bog spec Audi's sell in Ireland.

There doesn't seem to be any such sites in Ireland that I'm aware of as there wouldn't be much demand for it.
Germany is supposed to be the place to do something like this as the car rental costs are extremely low compared to here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,367 ✭✭✭DaveyDave

I see what the above post is saying about them not being prestige, in a sense. With the rise of PCP more people are buying new and higher spec cars they wouldn't buy otherwise. Not that it's out of their means but that it's just affordable as opposed to getting a big loan and paying for it up front.

While I've lost count of how many €100,000 6-series I've seen, it doesn't take away the fact they're still high end cars. There may be more of them on the roads thanks to the likes of PCP but for the rest of us who aren't earning triple figures they're still flash cars.

I personally wouldn't take a 6-series or A7 for the weekend and would go for the likes of a Mustang or Golf R, but to each their own. I've seen 3 Golf Rs around Lucan in recent months, doesn't mean they're any less of a desirable car.

As someone else mentioned above, something of a "dream" car like a Rolls or a Ferrari would be on a lot of people's list to drive for a day but let's not pretend like a €60,000 Volvo kitted out with another €10k of extras wouldn't be enjoyable :)

Volvo are a prestige car. They have never been mass market in the mould of Ford, Opel or Toyota and today are more of a competitor to German brands than ever.

Yes they can, it just means they'll have to compromise financially in other aspects of their life.

Thick ? They don't give finance for a new volvo xc90 if you say work in day Tesco. Now bugger off with your silly comments .

I'm a doctor and I know plenty of people at work on average wages with so called "prestige" cars, so you're wrong.

Most luxury car drivers aren't rich and many rich people don't drive luxury cars. Toyota is the most popular car brand amongst millionaires in the US.

I know a few people who work for Tesco and they're on a Decent wage, well above average.

    installed the fleet app
    Deleted it after 5 minutes
€30 a day for 10 year old cars
    Pure nonsense
You can rent a new golf for €10 a day

Why can't you use a car hire firm like Hertz or Avis. Rent from the airport outlets if you have one near you for choice. With Hertz they will often allow you to select a specific vehicle. Probably other car hire places offer that too
