Friend of mine looking for a
diesel mile muncher and a nice place to sit in for long long journeys.

    These are his picks:

    2002 Volvo S60 2.4 diesel automatic

2002 Renault Vel Satis 3.0 V6 diesel automatic

    2002 Citroen C5 2.2 HDI diesel automatic

What's your opinions on these for long trips and comfort, reliability, power etc
    thanks.

My choice among the ones cited in your post would be the volvo, in D5 form not 2.4D (actually the very same engine but with 160 hp for the D5 and 130 for the 2.4D, more importantly though, the D5 has more torque). This engine is a little gem, reliable, a pleasure to drive, not heavy on the juice (for what it is), mated with the autobox it's just a very nice thing to drive.

The rest of the car is also quite nice to sit in, seats are amazing, the trim shouldn't fall apart, it's available with nice toys as well

The renault is highly underrated, it's also very comfortable and can be bought cheap, but the engine in them is simply not as nice as the 5 pots from sweden. The citroen is aslo very comfortable, but the HDI is again not the best engine of the bunch. Anyway, just me though, I'd recommend he test drove them three extensively and make his own choice ;)

You'd want balls of steel to run a Vel Satis for high mileage usage. Their diesels at that generation also weren't great, not to mention the electrics.

C5 can be good but any that age will probably need a suspension overhaul if not already done.

Volvo is probably the best bet overall but due to age and mileage maintenance could prove expensive for what they are.

Don't forget they'll all be 16 year old diesel cars. Limited choice for someone looking for a well cared for one at that age to cover high miles.

The vel satis is awesome though.

Im running a d5 s60 Volvo on about 500 miles a week. It's rather heavy on juice and parts aren't cheap. New front disks and pads were almost 250 before I even fitted them and they eat through engine mounts at about 100 a pop. Great comfy car but you struggle to see 40mpg and that's with a feather touch right foot.

    Hes just thrown a

2002 peugeot 607 2.2 hdi, automatic into the mix and also a

    04 ford mondeo 2l auto.

He is in his late 50's and is just looking for a comfortable ride more than anything which is why the autobox is wanted.

Me, Id plump for the mondeo, I had the older model 1.8 TD and it was relatively cheap to run and v little problems, but it was boring behind the wheel.

I'd try a look at the Merc E Class. Something from 2005 onwards which were a bit more reliable and with the 6 cylinder lump. Probably won't get more comfortable than that.

I'd second the Mondeo had an 04 2 litre diesel. Good on diesel comfortable . Mine was a manual though so don't know what the automatic box is like

a mate of mine had one, gave him nothing but heartbreak. Comfy bus, that was about it. drove it once, was like a boat rocking from side to side.

The 2.2 hdi is nigh on bullet proof... Had one with over 200,000 miles driving like new and a friend has one with in excess of 400,000 miles and never missed a beat.

For comfort the C5 would be my choice over the 607 but it's marginal
