Tyres NCT failure question

One of my front tyres is slightly worn and will fail the test and will need to be replaced. If the car was to fail the NCT on this alone would I have to pay the retest fee or would a worn tyre just be a visual inspection? I'm going to put a new tyre on as its only just one slightly worn as the tracking must be off. But I'd rather do it after the test if there is no extra fee.

A visual inspection is free, just change the tyre and bring it back, job done!

A tyre fail is free re-test (unless for some reason it prevents the brake test or sumsuch).
Some people would put the spare on for the test if they were in your situation.

Don't have a spare, I have a can of gunge instead.

The problem in that case is i it's non directional, on the front at least, that isn't accepted by then, i tried and tested that :pac:

If they only fail you on the worn tyre, it's a free visual re-test.

Put it through and see how you get on!

    Best of luck.

There is no requirement to have directional tyres on the car.

Perhaps you mean you put a radial on the front with cross-ply opposite or on the rear for example?

With regards a re-test, for tyres a re-test is supposed to be done with the car lifted in the air so equipment is used and the test is not free (that's assuming it is done correctly - I've seen both ways used).

When is the last time you've seen cross-ply tyre?! I guess it is for one directional and one non-directional on the same axle...

THere is a requirement where directional tyre is fitted that its actually fitted in the right direction. That may be what was being referred to.

If you know it is on its last legs, just replace them. Both on the same axle. Will save you a trip to NCT centre.

    A long time ago!

No requirenent for such on the same axle, they just have to be the same size and aspect ratio.

The poster was referering to the spare wheel. A directional spare wheel would only be useful on two of the four wheels, hence why the spare wheel should never be a directional tyre.
