For across the counter cash, it's usually the better (on the day) of AIB or BoI. An Post simply picks a number in between the two of them each morning and the 'no commission' BS gets the punters in but they are never the best for FX, ever.

Are you planning a trip to the US and that's your budget? You're better off using plastic than converting your € spending money to $.

Get a dollar currency card from an post, put your dollars on it and there is no transaction fee when you use it in US unless you withdraw cash from a machine. You can check the balance on the card using your phone.

Sign up to revolut, cost a fiver to get a card from the and there's absolutely no fee for exchanging money. I've used it in the US a couple of times, and use it monthly converting sterling to euro

How long does that take? Or is it instant?

Realise that there will be modest differences between most bureaux de change. Phone around on the day. Do not do it at the airport. Doing one transaction will usually be the most efficient way to do it.

They do it while you are in post office, you need id (passport) and proof of address (household bill).

My daughter used the Post Office FX card while in USA for the summer. Super system - you put the money on when you collect the card on the day - you can top it up while in USA (transferring money to your FX card) - everything can be done online too which is great - you use it exactly as a DEBIT card while in USA - when u get home u just transfer back the money off the FX card...

What's the difference between that and just using a standard visa or mastercard debit card?

+1 million! They do have an express service too for the card delivery

    €1100 an post = $1267.31

    €1100 revolut = $1312.63

There's an extra $45 for yourself
