I went to see a car in a dealers today.

It's reg is 11D4xxxx. That's five digits after the "D".

I was surprised to see the speedometer and odometer in MPH and miles. The dealer said it was a secondhand import from the UK. He didn't import it but took it as a trade in.

I thought all secondhand imports being registered in Dublin got six digits starting at 120000 a few years ago.

The dealer said he hadn't a clue what I was talking about.

What's the story on the xxD120000 and why do you think this car is different?

They stopped the 120000 thing a few years back I think. I couldn't tell you when - my 06 is a 120xxx and VRTed 3 years ago, it might be the model year that determines it.

Anything up to and including 2010 imports get the silly D-12XXXX plates.

Anything 2011 or onwards gets the next available number,

Am I right in saying so, that the 120xxx series is still being allocated today to an import registered prior to 2011?
