My kid got eye test done last May in school and letter came back to say they would be in touch but she needs further assessment.

Nobody in touch yet, but now she is back in school, she is struggling with seeing the blackboard.

If we bring her to an optician ourselves can we claim back on prsi a free test as we can get don ourselves. Both parents working, daughter in senior infants, 6 years old.

I'm afraid not. Children aren't eligible for Optical benefit

You/your GP need to contact your local community ophthalmology service.

It takes a few months for eye and hearing tests unfortunately especially under the HSE once they have been seen in school,

My youngest failed her hearing test last September in school and we only received the 2nd test late august ,
Anything to do with children is a waiting game unfortunately,

Maybe speak to the teacher and have her moved closer to the board and ask if they can help in anyway

Eye test in most major opticians are free.

But leave your kid suffer whilst you figure out how to get €12 back from a smaller optician.

It's worth a phone call to the relevant health centre to see where she is on the list. I was speaking to another Mam at a birthday party the week after our kids were seen by the schools nurse, and she mentioned that her daughter had been referred for an eye test. About a fortnight later, that little girl had a pair of glasses on her, and I'm pretty sure she wasn't intending to bring the child privately.

That being said, it might be easier to just take her yourself to the optician if she's complaining, and if that's possible.
Apart from anything else, you can pick your time and day, rather than being given an appointment that suits them. Our local health centre is a half an hour away from my sons school. They send appointments for mornings only. There's usually drops that have to be put in a half an hour prior to the eye test. All that combined means that having his eyes checked means he needs to take a whole day off school, and I have to take at least three hours off work

It can take up to 18 months to actually be seen in the public system by an ophthalmologist

It costs 30 euor in the likes of specsavers to get her seen. but they arent always as equiped to deal with scared kids so you are better going to a smaller optician and paying the 30-50 euro now rather than waiting. Other option is to have gp send an urgent referral and you might get seen in uder 3 months ( i had to make 9 phone calls to get in in under 3 months even with an urgent referral)

Once a prescription is issued you will get free glasses under the hse scheme anyway so better off to spend the couple of euro and take her to the optician yourself and see where she stands, no point leaving her struggling in school. Also talk to the teacher about having her sit up front to help her out

I paid 20 euros in Specsavers for my daughter's eye test.
Wifey28, I was never told anything about free glasses ? I paid for 2 pairs for her, I rarely claim anything but this would really have helped.

free eye tests can be got.

    http://www.dit.ie/national-optometry-centre/appointment/

i got a free test as vision express under a year ago. took a phone call and had to book a free slot that was not next day.

thing is, a trip to town, with your child - vs €10-15 for a local eye test. It could be a false economy.
