I've a photo of one of the kids. I'd like to edit it so that there is just a black background with on the child in the photo - what's the best way to do this?

This is a job for photoshop or similar layer based application. The ease with which this can be done really depends on the current background and other factors such as the child's hair.

It might be worth posing a sample of the image - a few of the posters here might like he challenge!

Post the image so we can have or look! If you have a RAW version of the image that would be better still (but you would have to put it on Dropbox or something like that and share a link).

it might look a little odd if you completely de-contextualise the photo though. there might be other ways of dealing with the background in the shot if you don't like it.

I agree with this. Painting a black background around the child could look completely wrong. It depends on how the child is posed and what the lighting is like but you'd want to be well skilled to come out with something... not terrible and cheap looking. Given my assumptions on your photo editing skill level based on your question OP, I think this is something you should outsource.
