Job Situation

    Hi All,

I realise this may not be the biggest of problems, but I don't know what to do and am seeking outside advice.

I went back to college to do a masters in IT (i am in my 30's) I thought i would have no problem finding a job, however after countless interviews and rejections I am definitely disheartened. I have only been finished the course for a little over a month, but was looking prior to finishing too, with no success.

I have been offered a job, little to do with my course at entry level they have said the role will expand in a short period into a more suitable role.

I don't know whether to take it. What would people advise? Continue the job hunt (on the dole) until a job with good pay more suited to my qualifications comes along? Or take the job , considering I now have a student loan to pay and Christmas around the corner.

I think it is just the feeling that it was such a big deal to go back to college, with lecturers promising great job prospects...and I'm not seeing it. I am in debt and confused about what to do, any advice would be much appreciated.

    Thank you

You are unemployed, you need a job, you've been offered the job. Take the job.

It will be easier to find something more suitable if you already have a job.

Be careful with turning down the job. I believe that if the social welfare are told about you turning down an offered job, they could cut your payments. I might be wrong, but take it into consideration.

    Take the job... .

    I've been where you are.

Continue applying to other places while there ....

Thanks, my worry is getting stuck, I know I shouldn't be giving out about a job offer! zoobizoo, did you find it difficult getting time off for interviews and such though? This is one of my worries

Take the job. Once you're in a job it's easier to get a job.

was in similar situation years ago, was getting the 'too experienced' line for many jobs so decided to change tack, applied for an entry level job.
they couldn't figure out why I wanted it, but i convinced them to give it to me.
within 2 years had managed to get to middle management level and doubled my salary.
Take it, if you're any good you'll either get pushed up, or you can continue to apply elsewhere.
it's always easier to get a job when you have a job.

Have a job and you'll get a job. Take it.

A lot of people in IT start out on tier 1 style work, I would take the job, especially if it's a large company with a large Dev department.

Have to agree with other posters.
You have nothing to lose taking the job. I presume it pays more than social welfare.
It may not be the dream job you were hoping for but who knows where it might lead.
    Best of luck

    As above... Take it.
It'll boost your moral and could be a stepping stone to something else.
Try to excel yourself as best you can, even if it's a junior role.
The experience will make a huge difference and you'll either move up or be able to change to a better job before you know it.
    Very best of luck !

one more thing, as a person that now hires staff to work on my team, I always look for people that are prepared to take a step back to move forward. it shows character and resilience. it also makes a good talking point in an interview for the next job you apply for to show the type of person you are.

Better to be stuck in a job than stuck out of a job. Best case you like it and progress in the job / company. Worst case you use the experience as a stepping stone to a better job.
