Issue using Android Phones on Eir Fibre WiFi

    Hello,

I'm looking for a fix to the following issue that I've encountered. I recently got 150 mb Fibre installed by direct connection to the home using the F2000 Router provided by eir. This works to expected download and uploads speeds on the computer wired via ethernet cable to the router and no issues there. In the house, we have 3 apple devices connected to the fibre using Wifi and these are functioning correctly (Getting similarly good download/upload speeds and no lagging when using apps or the internet on these devices)

The problem is using android devices on the fibre. All 3 android devices are extremely slow and laggy on the fibre wifi (Either 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz connections). Using the speedtest it takes minutes to connect to the speedtest but it still shows similarly good download and upload speeds. Even downloading from app stores is fast once it connects. The issue is browsing the internet or surfing apps. It takes longer than my old broadband (1.5 mb download speed). There is obviously an issue with settings either on Eir Router or Android products or both given that all 3 android devices have the same problem.

To pre-empt a simple solution/response that could be given, ALL 3 android phones are new, capable of operating on 2.4 and 5 G connections with download speeds of up to 150 MB. Also they have been used on other Wifi connections with normal operation in other homes/businesses.

I'm looking for a solution laid out in simple terms/steps if possible here. There must be other users with similar issues as I'd be extremely surprised if all Eir customers using the current F2000 router didn't experience the exact same issues with android devices.

Also, if there is no solution if still using existing F2000 router as this in a known poor quality device, is there another router that other members of the community have purchased separately that a) work with eir fibre b) will fix this android device issue.

    Thanks a lot

Change dns to 8.8.8.8, see if problem goes away.

Everybody with Android phones are having problems with that router on Eir FTTH. I don't have an exact solution but it's something to so with DNS settings. There's a discussion about it here: https://community.eir.ie/broadband-services-25/slow-wifi-coming-from-the-f2000-router-292049

Not everybody. Many Android devices here, had many issues with Eir in general but wifi is always excellent if the system is working at all.

Changing DNS settings on the phone itself is a good place to start though.

Fing is a fantastic app for testing ping and things. In tools try pinging an external address, both the full domain name and the raw IP address and compare max and min latency. Run a traceroute and ping the intermediate steps to see if one stage in particular is giving trouble.

Just tried myself and it doesn't look like it includes DNS lookup in the ping time. Silly me. There are a few other toolkits out there I'll see if one looks more useful.

Its IPv6. Its trying v6 DNS, failing eventually, quickly doing a v4 lookup and boom working.
