    Hi.

I currently have a tv & bb connection in my house.

Over the past 6 months, its become increasingly clear that I'm pretty much only ever watching irish channels and occasionally a BBC. Sky etc dont really get used.

We are also huge Netflix/Amazon Prime users in the house. This makes up the rest of our viewing tbh.

So i've started dabbling into the idea of removing TV from our package and thinking about going just saorview.

But the thing is im totally new to the whole area and have been trying to figure out what the pros and cons are.

    Thus far i know:
    1) will need a UHF ariel - dont have one or a satellite currently.
    2) Might need a box - have to confirm if my TV is compatable, but im 80% sure that if i want to watch BBC or other Freeview channels i need both a box and a sat.

    What I dont know:
    1) are there other benifits of having a box - EPGs/Recording/internet connection for Prime/Netflix/Spotify etc?
    2) If i want to look at a box, what should I look for? what are the features etc that would make it worth while over another?

So Im looking for little bits of advice, things others wise theyd been told before setting it up, things that went wrong that they could have avoided, handy tips and tricks for set up and so on.

    Cheers.

You are correct. You need an aerial for the Irish, Saorview channels. If you are in a strong signal area you may get away with an indoor one but a rooftop or possibly attic mounted one is better. Chances are if the TV is relatively modern it will be compatible.
Unless you are near the border or some parts of the East coast, you will need a satellite dish and box for the free UK channels. For simplicity a FreeSat branded box is plug and play. Freesat+ models allow recording.
It is also possible to get combo boxes that combine terrestrial and satellite into one box. The advantages are no need to switch input between Irish and UK channels, they are all combined into one channel list in any order you wish. More advanced boxes allow recording one while watching another, series recording, 7day epg and the ability to stream live or recordings around your home network. Obviously the more advanced the box, the more setting up is involved.
I don't use (can't afford) Netflix, Prime etc so can't comment on them although I'm sure more advanced boxes can accommodate them. Others here will know more about this.
N.B. FreeView is the UK equivalent of Saorview, using a conventional aerial and only available in some parts of the country. Be careful not to get the wrong box.
