I went out at a whim with a friend yesterday. She called by to see if I would like to shoot the local river which is very low at the moment. I grabbed the main body (D800) and a couple of lenses and went. When we got there I found that the power switch had come on in the bag and both batteries were flat.
She had her Canon 60D and only shoots Jpeg. She had also taken the body with her 70-300 lens on it. Really needed a wide lens. I suggested she should shoot RAW+Jpeg so I could process some of her shots. She asked me to change it. Ten minutes later I was still trying! I have not really used Canon DSLR gear much but found their menu's very awkward to navigate. Eventually had to look it up on google and thought I had it. She asked me to shoot some shots on her camera. When I got the card home there were only Jpegs on it.

Maybe it's what you are used to but I cannot recall having trouble with my Canon G9's or G12. They seemed fairly straight forward for a compact/bridge.

Was this just a poor model and Canon DSLR's have improved or is this how they are and it's a matter of getting used to it?

The other factor is that I am used to Pro bodies and do find the Consumer bodies not as well suited to my shooting in the Nikon range too.

I'm afraid this is how it is. Nikon users are not bright enough to use Canon gear.

As this is the definitive answer I will be closing this thread now!!

i'm sometimes stumped by the camera (nikon) i've owned for years. usually when i do something by accident and am trying to figure out how to reverse it.

Apparently canon cameras are much more user friendly and intuitive to use compared to nikon. This seems to be the general consensus i come across online and talking to users of both. Obviously if you're used to a system then it's going to be a nigjtmare trying to use a different system. Been thinking about switching to the dark side myself (nikon) but i think I'm too invested in canon for it to be worthwhile. Plus the difference in the 2 operations would probably be very frustrating.

Don't listen to them saying its a Nikon thing, but I have to advise you, it may just be that you are getting old :p (starting to feel that way myself.... well... older.... by the day like.... at least on a Monday but that's allowed and to be expected apparently)

Same as - my M4/3 is so small with so many buttons bolted on, its almost inevitable that you hit some button accidentally and switch on some feature you almost certainly don't want.
When you discover this from Exif or whatever it takes time to reverse.

This has caused me to screw up shots for family occasions that cant be revisited.

I did get a few shots with her camera, and processed from Jpeg

and a candid portrait of the camera owner - much to her disgust.

Canon are voice activated. Have you tried just asking the camera to shoot RAW. Older models might require you to ask with an American accent or even in Japanese if it's an import.

    I'm older than Minecraft goats.
