home phone connection over ethernet

Hi
My house is wired for cat 6. My telephone connection is located upstairs in a store room which also houses the router and all the cat 6 lines which terminate there. However I wish to locate my home phone base unit and hand set down stairs in the sitting room where there is a RJ45 ethernet plug but no telephone connection. Obviously the telephone base unit uses the standard telephone jack. To complicate matters I also use this ethernet connection for a PC which is located in my sitting room.

Is there any way I can connect the phone into the ethernet plug by using a special adapter?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Something like this you had in mind?

or else you can break out two wires of the CAT cable at each end and use them for a phone line.
Doing this will reduce your connection from a 1Gb/s to 100Mb/s in the sitting room.
If you don't need the speed this is the simplest & cheapest way I know.

Thanks for the advice. Will have to look at splitting the cat6 as described. Internet speed is well below 100Mbits/s. I know someone who might do it for me.

You can get separate cordless phones that have separate base units to the handset so it wouldn't be necessary to have the base unit downstairs - Gigaset have ones - I have one in my attic with 2 handsets with their own chargers

Thanks. That's the exact model I have and what I'm doing at the moment. However, it's very regimented in that the fone has to be moved every day / night or two from downstairs to upstairs and visa versa. My old 3088 Skype-landline combo was great as the transmitter unit stayed upstairs hooked up to the phone line while the charger and handset unit stayed downstairs.
