Was given an old 'Gent' clock recently. Its main powered without the power cable. Its is decent condition, face is 12 inches diam
Looking to know is it safe to plug the mains directly ? back if the clock is stamped 200/250v 50~.

Or is best advice these days to convert it to a battery?
    advice appreciated

I have found with the old electric clocks(a few I inherited from my grandfather) that the mains cable is the weak point, but can be replaced(some have oddball plugs too). Replace that and they're good to go. Me? I'd ask a friendly electrician to re wire the mains cable and take it from there. Those older clocks can have a cool design and are worth preserving.

You could convert it to a battery driven quartz, but that can be hard enough as you have to get a quartz movement that fits the hands and replace it. If it was originally a smooth running seconds hand, you'll lose that as quartz seconds hands "tick" in one second intervals, which would be a pity. Again if it were me, I'd try and revitalise the original and keep it that way.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

thanks a lot, the mains cable is gone.
There is bakelite connecter that fits into the back of the 2 metal prongs( about 10mm apart) on the clock. Looks like I need to wire up to the connector and then plug that straight onto the pron. If it's safe Id really prefer not to modify it - thanks all
