New owner didn't transfer car and scrapped it

Bought a car off done deal and it was done through a car dealership though I don't think officially...

I'm still receiving motor tax reminders so decided to contact him. He says that the car has since been scraped and just ignore the letters. The car was a failed NCT with rust so it wasn't worth fixing up.

I phoned the tax office and they said I could fill out a form and get it signed by a solicitor to say I was no longer owner of the car. I suppose this is my only choice. If the car turns up in a field somewhere and they trace it back to me I'll be accused of illegal dumping and if the car isn't actually scrapped and is involved in an accident/speeding I'll be on the hook also.

Anyone find themselves in a similar postiion?

Happens everyday cause many people who sell personal cars don't seem to know that they have to sign the logbook, put new owners name & address on it and send it to Shannon themselves by registered post with the new owner along side at the Post Office so there is no confusion and once the car is sold they don't have to cry because they are now getting tax reminders, M50 tools fines, Garda enquiries cause your old car was used in a robbery and found burnt and so on...

Another solution would be to sign off ownership transfer at a Garda station so this kind of crap no longer happens...but no such service here

do you mean you sold a car on donedeal rather than bought it? Doesn't make sense to me

    Badly worded OP.

I read it twice and I think he means he bought a car and traded in his banger.

He is now receiving tax reminders for his old car which the dealer said was scrapped...
