Buying a UK registered car from dealer in Ireland

I'm sure there's a few threads on this and I didn't want to bring up an old thread.

As the title says, if I was to go down the root of buying a car from a garage that was imported from the UK, what documents and checks should I be looking for before handing over any money?

I had thought about travelling but I am looking to trade my car with this if I can't sell it privately.

    Thanks in advance...

There are stickies in this forum on how to buy a UK car, the basic information in those threads is still relevant. The only real difference is you are buying from a dealer here so they will VRT the car and put Irish plates on it on your behalf. Revenue will look for a copy of a payslip or something with your PPS number and a utility bill with your current address on it. (This is the county in which the car will be registered).

Make sure to do your own car history checks on the car before buying. Have a look at the V5 registration document and verify that the car reg and VIN match those on the car. Ask the dealer for the service history and ring the UK garages that serviced it to verify what they did. If you get some cock and bull story about the service history being missing then walk away as UK car owners are more meticulous around documented service histories than we are over here. A missing UK service history would suggest to me that they are hiding something especially around the validity of the car's mileage.

Once the car is on Irish plates give it 24 hours and you will be able to tax the car online using the 6 or 7 digits of the car's VIN as the PIN for the motortax site. Note that you will not be sent out the new Irish log book until it is first taxed.

Don't buy a car on UK plates from an Irish dealer....its against the law afaik.

They have to put it on Irish plates before selling it.

If I was you I would look for a reputable garage. I have bought UK imports before. No issues with a good few but got burned on one but was lucky I got refund

To save hassle I wanted a decent spec Galaxy and found Windsor Motors can actually source cars for you so I used them instead of the back street garage. I also got 3 years service thrown in as part of deal with 1 year RAC....I know it was a few quid more expensive than the back street guys but you don't have to worry about anything

If going to other garages don't take there word on anything. Do your own reports. They will supply you with one but they can be fake. Get the UK reg and if they wont give then walk away. If Audi then you can check with Audi UK for service history etc. Do not buy without service history. I guess you can do the same with rest of cars but I have only done with Audi....

Don't just take there word the service history is there, get the service book and read it, take photo's if you can and ring some of the garages. Ask them what mileage was on it. If a decent car it will probably be same garage the whole time so they will have full history.....

You can also check the MOT website and check what mileage was on each MOT.....
