    Hi guys,

I've been driving on Uk plates here for best part of 3 years. Due to a cock up on my part re job securuty and now direct debits to my UK insurer, that policy is due for cancellation in a weeks time.

I plan on changing over now to Irish plates and get myself insured over here properly and all above board ASAP

My question is can i book a one way ticket from Holyhead to Dublin for say tomorrow evening without having to actually do the over and back journey?

Would the email confirmation from the ferry company be sufficient (along with other relevant documentation) for the NCTS centre get the ball rolling on the VRT ?

    That would be fraud though.

If you believe that the Revenue will have no evidence that you have been here for the last 3 years then you better climb under a rock.
They will have dates, times etc of where you were in that car.

I dont doubt that! I did have an address in the UK for 2 out of those 3 years however. The car was off the road for a substantial amount of that time. I am just looking for advice for what my best play is.

My question then should possibly be, if i purchase a Holyhead-Dublin ticket, run it through the system as normal and flush it out the other end, what are the likely outcomes?

Might be an idea to go to UK, sell your car, and buy one similar....... Not that I like the fact that I pay more tax because other asshats evade theirs...

Do you intend to apply for a transfer of residence exemption? If yes, you need to show when you've up your UK residence (job, accommodation etc) and took up an Irish one (again, job, accommodation, utilities etc). The penalty is based on the VRT due and if you claim the exemption there is no effective penalty.

Even if I'm 3 years late with the paperwork after bringing the car over?!

The transfer of residence was my major issue to begin with. When I moved over with the car it was a temporary job, hence why I didnt change car over from beginning. I believed I would be back working in the UK quite soon. As it transpired my job became full time and as a result I've still got the plates, haven't been back to the UK and am now in my situation (of which I'm aware is my own making).

I'd get banned if I expressed my real thoughts OP, but you've been avoiding VRT and driving against the law here for years, and you come looking here for help on how to get yourself out of this situation? You obviously have no shame but I would suggest if you go trying to scam Revenue you will get caught, they are patently smarter than you, and when you do you will get no sympathy here.

I understand your feeling towards it. I am for what its worth trying to rectify the situation and get everything above board. Ill take the slap on the wrists etc

Im trying to suss out how to approach doing so. I believe there will be additional charge applied to my VRT. Can anyone confirm?

For what its worth ive never set out to scam revenue. Work circumstances dictated why i didnt change over in first place as thought id ve back in uk sooner rather than later. Subsequently things changed and im now trying to fix the problem. Again i admit its one of my own making for letting it run as long.
