So my wife's car was hit in a carpark today.
Very luckily for me some guy parking directly opposite caught the whole thing on his dashcam. He then waited for my wife to come back and sent her the clip. Can clearly see the license plate and see my wife's car shake from the impact.
Needless to say the driver of the car reversed back out of the space and drove off, not knowing about the good samaritan.

So have gone to the police and reported it but the garda at the desk was very dismissive of me. So I'm not sure what to expect here.

He told us it could take a couple of weeks to get back to us with insurance details.
Surely that isn't right, is it?

It is , owner of the car has to be approached to say who was driving the vehicle, driver then has 10 days to produce their insurance.

Around this time last year someone hit the car i was driving while parked in a car park. Had a 15 minute time frame so the gardai got cctv checked. Man was contacted, I gave him the opportunity to pay cash for the repair.
Just over a month to be sorted. Hope this helps

See when you say it like that it makes more sense, would have been useful if the garda said something like that.

So in the mean time what should we do, contact our insurer or bring the car to be repaired?

Probably wouldn't get it repaired , driver of the other car or their insurance company will probably want to see the damage to assess it before paying up. Very lucky it was caught on dash cam , love when people get caught after driving off

I guess the Gardai have more important stuff to work on than a car park prang.

Why not just run it through your insurance company ? Sounds like you have all the evidence you need. If the insurance company can't track the hit'n'run driver down then its time to approach the guards.

I was hit by someone visiting a neighbour of mine. Had it all on camera. Went to the guards, with time, details, reg, damage done, photos, video. Gardai contacted the person at least 10 times. Gardai eventually said there's nothing they can do, as the person never got back to them. That was nearly 3 years ago

Happened to me last year and had it on my own dash cam. Guards not interested no matter how many times I called either on the phone or called into them. I let it go in the end as I had been thinking of changing cars and wanted to move on from the whole thing.. You'll get mixed responses - people who are careful in carparks will tell you to pursue it and people who've no problems smacking their doors off other cars will think you're a pr!ck for daring to want the damaged fixed. When I got my new car I took out the extra that basically covers me for carpark dings - every ding I got on that other car was in blanchardstown! :(

Ask your insurer for advice on what to do (unless you have done so already).

Speak to your insurer, get their advice on how to proceed.

Was there much damage done to the car?

Anecdotally and the usual friend of a friend story, but there were some guys in the garden, trying to break in and rummaging through the shed.
Called the Gardai, nothing. No-one near, no-one available, so sorry, someone will be with you shortly.
Called the Gardai back, "I cornered one of them and hit them in the head with a shovel, he's down and barely breathing". 5 minutes later several squad cars arrive with lights and sirens. Guy got so much sh*t from the Gardai over this.

Moral of the story, unless someone is seriously injured all you will get is a stifled yawn, a dismissive wave and perhaps something about "civil matter" mumbled at you.

Just ring insurance company til them car no. Xxxx has hit my car and left scene. Have video evidence, also could you inform the guards the ocupants left the scene without leaving details.

No. Get it repaired and send the bill.

The other f$$$$er has the obligation to notify his insurance company. If he does not, but there is evidence like that, there is hardly anything they will be able to do bar load him like hell next time.

There was a thread here before about someone damaging a motorway barrier and forgetting to notify the company. They ended up paying a hefty sum because they weren't in a position to challenge the bill at all.

That's gross misconduct on their side. I would have filed a formal complain.

It was criminal damage to the property, they have obligation to go ahead.

The OP's insurance company have no part to play in this unless you wish them to repair the car under the comprehensive section of the policy, which then gives them the right to seek recovery from the 3rd party. It stays as a claim on your record until recovered

They have bigger fish to fry - I get it we all do! Why waste my time even taking the complaint and keep telling me to ring back at X time... only for them to tell me to wait and come back and say the guy was in out in car.

I must dig that clip out and upload on the dash cam thread! I didn't post it at the time to give the other guy the benefit of doubt etc oh and got a quote to only respray one side of the number to save him money

My cam records in parking mode btw which is how I had the license plate/mode but when I changed cars I upgraded to front and rear cameras!

The OP's company can request the details from the guards, contract their insurance company etc and still give them the option to pay themselves rather than go through insurance. FBD were really pushing for me to let them get the info but it had been dragging on a couple of months at that stage so i just left it. Really it boils down to how determined the OP is and how much damage is done.

The OP's insurers can only pursue their rights under subrogation. They won't pursue the OP's rights directly unless they open a claim under their own policy first

Yep they told me that i'd have a claim on my policy that wound't affect my NCB... but it was still a claim which made me wonder if it'd come back and bite me in the a$$. Just seemed like too much hassle - in my case anyways!
