Why exactly is there no way to determine if a car has been reported as stolen?

I've always bought through dealers but I am now looking for a second car for the house and have been considering a private deal.

I was looking at the likes of cartell and what not as a means of checking the history of the car. To my surprise there is no means available by which a prospective buyer can simply ascertain whether a car (by reg or VIN) has been previously reported as stolen.

    Is this not ridiculous?

Private deals are done every day - how are people protecting themselves against falling victim to buying a stolen car?

Make sure the seller has the vlc for the car and it is in their name and the address is the address you are buying the car from.

Basic check anyone buying a car would/should do

Nothing is forgery proof. But the chances that someone is going to forge a document for a stolen car including vin numbers and all the other particulars of the car and then stick their name and address on it proving they stole it are very slim. Or you are dealing with a skilled forger who is a complete idiot
